Broken: Apple's iPod repair costs

Dave J. Lowe writes:

This screenshot from Apple's Support page shows the cost to have any out-of-warranty iPod repaired. To have my first-generation 5GB iPod repaired (faulty hard-drive), I would pay $255.95 to receive a replacement first-generation 5GB iPod. That's roughly the same price as a brand new third-generation 10GB iPod! When I called their repair hotline about it, they eagerly advised me to just buy a brand new iPod. An Apple Store employee advised me to sell it on eBay. Good customer experience? Something's definitely broken here.

Comments:

Remember, the iPod Battery Replacement Program is separate from this, at US$90 for parts and labour. So, the US$295 cost only applies to the rest of the components. That is, the screen, the motherboard, the hard drive and the case.

i would agree that the price is exorbitant if all you need is a new faceplate, however, I would also point out that anything which cases massive damage to the case is probably going to kill at least the screen as well.

Basically, it looks like, for US$295 Apple will either send you a new equivalent-model iPod (if your hard drive is dead), or send you a new, equivalent-model, iPod with your data copied onto it (if anything but the hard drive is the problem.)

And, finally, when you consider that replacing the Hard Drive or motherboard/screen combination is probably going to be at least US$200 for parts and labour at a fair pricing, the idea of buying a new iPod (with three times the hard drive capacity) doesn't seem completely ridiculous.

After all, take a look at what it would cost to get the compressor in your fridge fixed...

scott:

Apple is notorious for consistently wiping hard drives before returning them to the customer. It is true for all their other systems, so I can assure you a repaired ipod would be conveniently erased before it was returned to you.

Posted by: kwyjibo at March 25, 2004 09:38 AM

The point is not that they wipe the disk. If you send an iPod in to them, they will send you a refurbished iPod back, *not* your own iPod. If you have something engraved, they will keep the faceplate.

This is *good*, as it speeds up repair. Furthermore, you most likely have a backup of your data on your PC or Mac, anyway.

It's a bit odd to talk about the price of something as "broken". I mean, I can think of thousands of things that I think are overpriced, but it'd make for a pretty dull weblog. :-)

They have opened the doors to the public and would like to help out iPod owners across the globe with their top notch support. Please. Try getting lots of other electronic devices repaired--for most of them you wouldn't bother, because it would cost more than the product. I once threw away an entire electric lawnmower (priced similarly to an iPod) 'cause I couldn't get it fixed for less than a new one would cost. This is not out of the ordinary. Just because it's Apple, people love to bitch.

I had a similar experience trying to get a printer fixed through Best Buy. They wanted almost $300 for repairs, yet a similar printer was available on their shelves for less than $100.

It's a shame that we live in such a disposable society, where it's cheaper to buy a new one and toss the old one into a landfill.

Screen on my ipod mini went blank after three months. Because of miniscule dent on case (suffered 2 months before screen went blank), Apple voided warranty and offerred to repair for (you guessed it) $255.95--more than a brand new unit. Love Apple products--hate Apple service.

I have a third generation iPod with headphone jack problems - one channel only and screwy volume (not software, a hardware connection prob). I took apart my iPod, desoldered and removed small metallic case protecting the Firewire and 3.5mm jacks, and am stuck... the volume problem stems from a broken solder poi nt on the outside of the 3.5mm jack casing (easy enough to repair); however, the channel problem means that one of the connectors inside the jack broke off (I think). Any suggestions?

PS : I can't find a suitable replacement jack, otherwise I'd just say screw it and lift the damn jack off the mainboard and replace it.

PPS : For the love of god, don't just refer me to some repair site...

The Apple IPOD needs some serious tech work before it gets put on the market.

I've had both the 15GB and 20GB and when the battery weakens, the hard drive goes completly dead. It becomes shaky and a clicking sound occurs. There is nothing you can do. It needs repairs. For the price they're sold at, they should perfect the item before putting an expensive price tag and sell them in stores.

Apple really needs to become more compatible with technology.

I have a 10 gig ipod. Last week my computer would not recognize it. I tried everything. I rebooted, I bought a new wire for it, I reinstalled the original music match software, I updated music match, I contacted music match for help who told me that they do not support ipod anymore. I installed Itunes. It still would not recognize it. S*!!T, maybe it is my computer. I restored and reformatted my hard drive. I installed music match, I installed Itunes, no help. I guess I'll pay $59.00 to ask a couple of simple questions to apple. For $300.00, I hoped for more customer service than that. Well this is my first experience with apple and maybe my last.

I have a 1st Generation iPod and have been querying whether or not to take it back to the apple shop to get it repaired as it may be the battery that needs replacing - £99 or the hard disk. I have seen this new U2 iPod and was wondering whether anyone has it and would like to shed any light on my situation. As it is the 1st iPod ever to be produced I wonder whether it is worth paying a sum of £50 + the cost of items that need to be replaced to restore an original iPod that is no longer being sold.

Hi, I have a 2nd generation iPod, 10GB. Recently it fell to a carpet floor while in a protective case while I was on the phone, (it fell out of my lap) Thinking nothing of it, I walked away, but when I went to listen, sound came from the right side only and as I jiggled around the broken plastic, sound doesnt come out unless I am in the exact perfect spot. I really dont want to pay 65 dollars to get it fixed, does anyone have a "how to" or any good advice. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Posted by: Mike at January 20, 2005 02:37 PM

After total frustration trying to get my daughters' iPod fixed...dropped it..now has a spider-screen, I simply started writing letters to the editor of local nespapers, warning parents of the ease of breakage and cost of repair.....not that Apple cares, but it gave me some sadistic satisfaction that I may have put a small dent in their sales of this product...Be assured, I will never buy another Apple product. The folks at the Apple Store in Denver actually laughed at me when I wanted to repair an IPOD... they had obviously heard it all before.....write your local media and every computer mag to complain.

Posted by: Frank at January 24, 2005 05:18 PM

I had the same experience. We bought an Ipod and bought the "protective" cover for $20 more as advised by the Apple salesperson. My son dropped it from about 1 foot off the ground and the screen broke. $249 to fix it (aka - buy a new one). I spoke to everyone I could at Apple. I was advised to go on the internet and have a service company (other than Apple) fix it for 50-70% less. I too will never buy another Apple product. They are way too delicate, especially for kids/teens. It's a rip off.

Hey everybody. I have a broken lcd for a 4th generation ipod. Does anybody want to sell me that part? Or an entire broken Ipod? I suggest that all upset individuals write an actual letter to apple. It counts a lot more than emails, and it counts infinitely more than just posting about it (but posts can be a good resource). I'm very upset that these ipods are so flimsy. For $300, one would expect a product to last.

It was interesting reading all of the comments about the ipod LCD screen repairs. We have also gone through the same procedure with our daughter's 4G iPod she purchased a few months ago. The LCD screen cracked in spite of being inside of two protective cases. Best Buy would not honor their Product Replacement Plan and Apple rejected the warranty repair. They didn't even offer to replace it for a charge. I too feel this device is too flimsy for their targeted market. It's supposed to be a portable device and should not break under such day to day handling. The suggestion to write letters (rather than emails) seems right on.

Well, I'm not a happy camper. My ipod mini just quit working. So they had me send it off and replaced it with a refurbished unit. Would you believe the refurbished unit did not work out of the box. The contrast is all messed up. You can adjust it so you can see the screen, but you if you turn on backlit the screen gets all these smear marks due to the contrast set to high. So you can turn the contrast down. So if you wish to turn the backlite on or off, you must adjust the contrast as well. I'm going to the apple store tomorrow. They better fix this. Guess I'm just ranting. You'd think someone returned a faulty product they would make certain the replaced product worked. I'm left wondering if the ipod difficulties I have now are the reason why it was sent to Apple in the first place.

Posted by: j at March 6, 2005 03:41 AM

Dan Vanzino: I do not have an Ipod but, The way windows formatted it is probably not the type of Format Apple uses and probably the ipod does not recognize the harddrive. You probably have to get a new one for $300+ or you can ask someone with a broken ipod with a working harddrive that apple formated.

Hey there. I recently recieved an iPod mini 4GB for my birthday(yesterday). Today, it fell off my desk somehow. I heard it fall, and when I picked it up off the ground I noticed it had a small but noticable crack on the top of the LCD screen. I turned it on, and noticed that the entire upper right hand part of the screen does not work. It lights up but shows no letters. I do have a 1-year warranty for it, but I noticed it was useless after I read about how it doesn't cover damaged parts, which is bowl crap. So I surfed around trying to find a quick, cheap replair place where I can get the screen fixed and replaced for $100 or less. I have yet to find one. I did find iPodResQ.com, but it does not tell me how much it would cost to repair the screen. Does anyone have any idea of how much it would cost to repair the screen and where I can get it fixed, or if apple MIGHT cover it in the warranty? THanks. Get me back at DarkViper1@comcast.net

i bought a 40 gig ipod 4 days ago and wen i was taking it out of my pocket and unravelling the head fone cords they slipped out of the ipod causing it hit the ground quite hard. Of coarse, knowing my luck the screen got a crack through it now only enabling half the screen to work. the ipod still works, and i know that because it was my accidental fault for dropping it they more then likely wont fix it under warrenty.. any input on the warrenty subject would b really helpful. If it deffinatly cant b put under warrenty can soemone tell me how much they think it would b to fix the screen?. but my other question is that wen it dropped it scratched the front white part and its dinted up a bit. does anyone know if your able to get another new white thing for ur ipod? thanks

Posted by: Nate at March 21, 2005 06:57 PM

Is the screen just dead or is it leaking.

Posted by: unknown at March 24, 2005 03:26 PM

Also what does the ipods warranty cover.

Posted by: unknown at March 24, 2005 03:27 PM

There is a simple fix to brpken ipods.

STOP BUYING THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: unknown at March 29, 2005 03:42 PM

The warranty will not cover cracked lcd´s ..period....

Try instead: (http://www.ipodrepairs.nl/) if in europe, or

(http://ipodmods.com/mods/index_load.htm) if in the US.

Try NOT buying them, there are better ones for way cheaper!

I too have a new 4th gen ipod and yes I dropped from my desk onto a carpeted floor and yep the go$%$&*^damn lcd now only shows about 1/3 of a display. And yes you guessed it! I sent it in and yep I was essentially told by Apple "You're F^&%ed" These guys really suck! If nokia, samsung, motorola etc can make a phone I can basically abuse all day in my truck and it still works why can't these apple assholes do the same! And their customer care.....isn't!!!!!!! Anyone got a screen for a 4th gen? Anyone got any tips or pics on taking the thing apart? I have heard its tricky THanks

Posted by: Jim at March 31, 2005 09:36 PM

That is because apple is rotting. and its seeds(ipod) grow into more roting apples. so you pay $300 for a rotting apple

I had got my iPod for a birthday gift about 2 or 3 monthes ago, and i was walking around with my iPod inside of my purse. Then I "accidently" dropped my purse and when i went to see if my iPod was okay, i had found that my LCD screen was cracked like ink was inside or something...So i sent it into Apple and they said my warranty won't cover accidents and it would cost so and so for it to be repaired. That's CRAP! To APPLE WHAT IS THERE DEFINTION OF WARRANTY AND REPAIR?? cuz it seems like you don't kno.. But if anyone has a LCD screen that they would like to sell plz email me!

Posted by: Lisha at April 7, 2005 11:38 AM

My daughter bought an iPod mini and paid extra for the extended warranty. When she dropped it and it stopped working (two months after purchase), we ran to the Apple store to trade it in. But the clerks told us that the warranty was void, and that we should go find a non-Apple repair place. Wha??!?!? I think that they should fix the unit (even if I have to pay) AND LET THE WARRANTY CONTINUE. The price for the machine and the price for the warranty are both rip-offs.

I got myself a 4th generation, or plainly just a 40gig, i reckon the hard drive is screwed up since it keeps on making some sort of reving engine noise, it blanks out, and whenever it does decide to turn on the bloody screen, a icon of a folder with an exclamation mark will pop up. So going back to the original questions....am i screwed? and do i need a new hard drive?

Posted by: Am i Screwed? at April 24, 2005 02:19 AM

My son purchased an Apple iPod, 30 December 2004 and the LCD display went bad on or about March 29,2005. Thinking this would be covered under warranty we contacted Apple and went through the process of sending the unit back. I was informed that Apple was not going to cover it under warranty as their service department determined the cause of the LCD display failure to be either an accident or abuse and they promptly shipped the broken iPod back to us. I called the service center and asked how they could determine that when there were no visible signs of abuse on the outside casing of the unit. The service center technician said that the LCD screens could break just by being pressed in between two books in a kids backpack. It makes you wonder how companies like Nokia and Motorola can build cell phones with LCD displays that take a pounding and still work yet Apple can’t. I asked how much it was going to cost to have them repair it and they informed me that it cost too much to repair and that was why Apple service center shipped it back without giving us the opportunity to have them repair it. They said I would be better off buying another iPod. I asked to purchase an LCD screen so I can replace the LCD screen myself and was informed that Apple could not supply the part. In fact I was told that they couldn’t get the part. After a lot of searching on the Internet concerning broken iPod LCD screens, I found some very alarming posts. Seems there are a lot of folks out there who have had the same problem with LCD screens and been given the same run around from Apple. Bottom line, it appears to me that Apple is selling iPod’s with defective LCD screens with a warranty they have no intention of honoring due to the fact they can’t provide the parts themselves. I am now seeking legal action in this matter and I urge anyone who has experienced a similar problem with Apple to do the same.

For anyone who may have been told that the high cost of repair was due to intensive labor in repairing this problem, I was able to remove the defective part in less than 5 minutes, and installing the new LCD screen would take about as much time. I have been an electronic/computer technician for over 20 years.

For anyone who feels they have been cheated by Apple you can file a complaint with the FTC online at http://www.ftc.gov and with the Better Business Bureau at http://www.bbb.org/pubsplash/pubsplash.asp

Its easy and the more people file the quicker we'll get results.

However the cheapest 4th generation LCD screen I could find was $139.00.

I guess I’ll just have to wait until they come down in price.

What can i do if i dropped my iPod in some water? Will it work again if i just let it dry out for a couple of days? A similar thing occured with my mobile phone and it worked fine, or is my iPod screwed? Can i get it repaired on home insurance like i did with my computer?

Posted by: Antoni Domanski at May 1, 2005 01:27 PM

I broke my 40G iPod screen after 14 months. I simple rang my house insurance and got them to send a cheque for it, they didn't even ask for the old iPod back. They paid for a new iPod Photo 60GB for me. The 40GB was in shuffle mode, so I can use it as a big big big shuffle iPod and also as an external HD. So, the question is, why do you pay out so much for an iPod and then not insure these things? I disagree with the phone comparison, compare it to a Nokia with a similar size case and I'm sure it would break just as easily, try putting some pressure on a Nokia 6630 - that would be a fair comparison, but to compare a 3g or 4g to a little 6310 doesn't seem right at all, compare the iPod mini to the small Nokia's. Anyway, INSURE your possessions, then you won't have to worry.

Well, say hello to another victim of Apple's flimsy ipod and unfair warranty and repair service. We were suckered by the pretty design and large capacity, but this is clearly not a device that should be bought for kids and teenagers- it's far too delicate. Maybe far too delicate for anything in real life. I also will never buy another Apple product. Even when setting it up, we could only get the software to install in one of four computers! Help on the website is abysmal as well.

I brought my iPod to school one day and i didnt put it in my case, since i didnt before and it didnt break, think, why start now. So when 6th period was over, i looked in my binder, and i saw that my iPod cover was cracked, but there was absolutley no damage to the outside of the iPod. But it looked like some kind of ink was on the inside. Most places make you pay like $125 dollars for the screen which is bull shit, cause i only paid $180!! And Apple just rips you off, how are they gonna repair stuff for you when they audomatically assume it was an accident and they wont repair it, of course its gonna be an accident or else the god damn thing wouldnt have happened in the firsts place. SO WHY THE HELL DO THEY HAVE A REPAIR SERVICE!?!?!

Simple fix.

Step 1. Take parts out of ipod casing.

Step 2. Make new steel casing for ipod w/thick piece of plexi glass over spot for screen.

Step 3. Put ipod parts into steel casing.

Step 4. Mass produce new steel ipods and rub it in Apples CHEAP A** FACE.

Bought 30Gb 3rd Gen iPod on May 5, 2004. Today is May 24th 2005 -- awful screeching from iPod, sounds like the drive is chewing itself up. Called Apple, they say "no way, warranty is over". I half-expected them to say "no prob, send it in", but after reading all this I'm not suprised with the answer I got. Customer service is non-existent at Apple, literally -- go ahead and try to find a number or e-mail address.

My 1st generation Ipod's (5 Gig) hard drive died and it is out of warranty period. I went to OWC and they have video on how to take apart the iPod (including tools) and to replace the battery. It should not be that much more difficult to replace the hard drive.

I am going to replace the battery $39.99 and the hard drive with a 40 GB notebook hard drive at $71.00. It should cost me about $110.00 just for the parts. The labor I'll do myself. They really stick you for labor. I'll report back to you if I succeed. It doesn't look that difficult. Hope this saves you some money.

I bought a 40GB 4th gen iPod just before Xmas 2004. Within about 4 times of using it, I got the exclamation mark coming up on the screen and nothing would work.

I took it back to the Apple centre in the Sydney CBD and it took about 2 weeks to get a replacement.

Then after having no problems with that one for a couple of months, all of a sudden the jack for the iTrip and remote stopped working. So I took it back to the Apple centre and this time it took 6 weeks to get a replacement.

I am now on to my third iPod and guess what, this one didn't even work once. When I turn it on, I get the option to select a language but none of the buttons on the dial work.

So now, I will be taking a trip to the Apple centre again. They will probably give me another replacement which doesn't work. I'm going to see if I can get my money back instead. This is ridiculous.

Don't buy an iPod. Mine has spent more time in the repair shop than it has playing music in my ears!!! It is a complete rip off.

i was skateboarding with my ipod mini 4 gig in my front pocket when someone jumped in front of me from in between some cars. i jumped off my board and ended up slamming my leg on a pillar hard enough to knock me over. my ipod was still playing music at this point so i skated back to my car. when i took my ipod out and looked at it i noticed that the belt clip (i wore the belt clip for 'extra protection' in case i bailed on it) had made a pretty bad dent in the back of the case. i thought it was just a bad dent, and was thankful it still worked. then, when i tried to go back to the menu the ipod quit working. i couldnt get it to do anything, when it turns on it flashes either the battery icon or the files icon. of course i sent it in to apple, and i assumed i would have to pay for it to be repaired since it was my fault, but the repair cost is as much as a new 4 gig. i know this story isnt as outrageous as the rest, but i was wondering if anyone knows what i might be able to do to fix it myself. the back of the case is dented, which i figure is where the board is located, but i have no idea. if anyone knows what i might be able to do, please contact me. also, if anyone thinks im fucked, ill buy an iriver and sell this one to someone. its only 5 months old so everything should be in good condition, and the screen actually didnt break, which reading this is a surprise to me now. thanks---

ps- also, they didnt wipe the hard drive, so someone will get 4 gigs worth of underground hardcore bands. lucky--

I got an 4th Gen 40Gig iPod for Christmas. 2 weeks later I dropped it (fell off a desk) and the lcd cracked but with only minor interference, still worked fine. fast forward to now (6 months after incident) It decides to turn on and not turn off, and then dies. I've tried everything with Apple Tech, my computer detects it for a few moments but the iPod fails (little folder with exclamation point, apple logo and all).

And I'm covered by the extended apple care plan until 2006. Basically apple's attitude is that since I dropped it any problem that happens afterwards - even if the problem truly is their lousy hardware - it's my fault and they won't fix it. I should spend $250 or sell it and buy a new one (AS IF - once bitten twice shy). and really, my friend's iPod has had the same problem and she's never dropped it. go figure.

frustrated beyond belief!

Despite the fact that we wouldn't get any benefit probably in the end, a class-action lawsuit against Apple for making what seems a shoddy product.

Don't they test stuff that's supposed to be portable before they put it on the market? You test other things to see the abuse they can take or for safety reasons.

It's simply too easy to crack the screen - at least from what I've read here - and a very convenient way to void paid for service contracts/warranties so they can push you to pay for repairs or new machines. I also can't believe they sell these with only a 90 regular warranty. If I had known then what I know now I would have told my boyfriend to buy me a different gift!

Luis,

Thank you for contacting Best Buy about receipts. I'm Dean with Customer Care.

We appreciate your concern about receiving a receipt copy of your Apple Ipod purchase. Currently we only have access to receipts on check and credit card purchases that are less than two years old. If your purchase does not meet that criterion, we will be unable to fulfill the receipt request.

Thank you for sharing your comments with Best Buy. Please don't hesitate to contact us with additional questions or concerns.

Best wishes from Best Buy,

Dean and the Customer Care Team

I sent to Best Buy:

So, what I going to do with a brand new iPod that broke down after two days from purchasing from your company? Apple wants to exchanged for a new one but requires proof of purchase. That means: we are stranded all because of BestBuy!

It seems that my only chance it's going to broadcast this emails all over forums that have interest on iPods, and at least people are going to be more carefull to purchase Apple products from BestBuy.

Final: In other words, we the Apple users are totally stranded. Nevertheless Apple in my case knows that my iPod it's brand new but they do not want to exchange it. amazing!!!

I just repaired my Ipod through Ipodmods and they lied to me. I am currently serving in Iraq right now, and asked them if they could help me out by giving me a discount. They told me it would cost $300 to repair it, and I asked if that would be cheaper than buying a new one, in which they replied yes. They also promised me a new silicone case and when I recieved the Ipod it looked the same with no silicone case. I then find out I can buy a brand new one for the same amount. I feel I have been swindled, when I'm out here fighting for our country. I have other things to worry about and this just caused me more stress. I feel like I just went to a car mechanic and was tricked like some ignorant fool. Please pass it on that Ipodmods just swindled someone who's trying to protect their country from terrorists.

Thank you

Hello

I broke my LCD screen.

I checked out Apple's website and was shocked at the repair price. I say posted on this website that 'IPODMECHANICS.com' could fix it for $99.00 dollars. I took a chance and sent my IPod away and got it back in working order in eight (8) days, VERY PLEASED. The price has sense gone up to $110.00 but still alot less than apples or a new IPod.

I dropped my ipod mini a couple of months ago. After that, when I plugged the earphones in completely, only one ear worked. When I pulled the earphone jack partly out, both ears worked. So I was able to continue using the unit, except for having to "jiggle" the earphone jack a little to maintain the connection.

Suddenly, however, the earphones don't work at all. Everything else seems normal -- just no sound coming through the earphones. (The problem persists when I change earphones, so it's in the ipod itself.)

What do I do?

Bought a 40gig ipod christmas 2004 and a hardshell case for it.

Stopped working on 7/13/05 and only displayed the folder and exclamation point icon.

Took to apple store where purchased and while it is still under one year warranty , they can replace it with a refurbished model and say that "sometimes the hard drive goes bad" We only had used about 4 gig og the 40 gig so far.

Apple advertises these on TV showing a rollerblader skating around and using an ipod.

I feel I should get aq brand new ipod and a new one year warranty or the option of a full refund for a faulty product.

Why is Apple acting like such a third rate company?

So I have a 3rd Generation 20 GB ipod and about two months after the warranty expired it decided to start gving me trouble. As someone in a post from 2004 mentioned,

"The Apple IPOD needs some serious tech work before it gets put on the market.

Apple really needs to become more compatible with technology."

Anyway, the exact same thing happened to me Ipods are built to be defective and Apple plans to do nothing about it. Now Im looking at plenty of repairs that could cost around 200 dollars and will have to buy a new one.

What disgusts me is that Apple doesnt even offer any repair programs, nor do they seem to care enought to fix this problem.

I am really disappointed. I once had faith in Apple but I am now on the verge of boycotting their products. Im extremely dissapointed with their service and the way they treat their customers!!!

I normally wouldn't post a comment but after reading Dmirty's comment which was made TODAY...I couldn't resist. I bought a 15GB ipod one year and 19 days ago. Conveniently, 19 days after my year warranty was up, my ipod hard drive decided to go crazy. Just as described in the comment made before mine, my ipod became shaky and a clicking sound started and now there is no hope I am told except to repair it for basically the same cost as a new one. I am shocked and completely disheartened with Apple. I couldn't believe when I accidently came across this website when searching for ipod repair!!

I have great news, or what i beleive is great news. Updating from my previous comment and in response to the comment Julie made, I was busy looking for repairs and found that the cost would be so great that it wouldnt be worth fixing the iPod at all since the problem was originally with the battery and that caused the harddrive to die. So by my estimate, both the battery and harddrive would need to be replaced.

Getting back to my point, I was fed up and turned to the Apple web Site forums to see what info they had. Anyway, I stumbled onto this class action lawsuit that I undrestand will be settled on the 25th of August.

Link:"http://www.appleipodsettlement.com/index.html"

In brief, the lawsuit is about defective apple batteries if you purchased a new 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation iPod before May 31st, 2004 and experienced battery failure after a year and no later than two years. If settled, and from what ive gathered it will, those with 1st and 2nd generation iPods would recieve a small sum of money (50 dollars of Apple Store Credit) and those with 3rd generation iPods would be eligible for a new iPod, or money back if they had their batteries replaced, etc.

I assume those of us who had problems like myself, caused by battery failure, are eligible to fill out claim forms, though I plan on emailing the lawyers responsible for the class action lawsuit to verify. I will update this site with any new information I recieve.

Thats about all. I filled out my claim and mailed it today. In the mean time, I dont plan on fixing the iPod or touching it, so Apple cant point a finger at me later and claim that forfitted my rights by haveing it fixed and looked at.

If anyone has any more info on this, I would greatly appreciate you posting it here or emailing me. Either one is fine.

Also, I am trying to gather more information about this partcular problem with my iPod, in case I need it in the furture, so anyone with information is welcomed to tell me what they know or about their experience. Also, i could use information about repairs for this particular problem as I plan on submitting my comments to the law firm dealling with this class action.

LASTLY, before I continue my endless rant, I ENCOURAGE ALL THOSE WHO QUALIFY TO MAKE A CLAIM (You can check out if you qualify by going to the website I listed earlier) TO DO SO. PEOPLE SHOULDNT BE FORCED TO BUY NEW IPODS IF THEIR IS A CHANCE SOME OF US MAY QUALIFY UNDER THIS LAWSUIT.

Boy, this is a great way of venting my frustration at Apple. I have a giant foot I would love to stick up some Apple executives ass.

HELP ME!!!!!! My dad is an orchestra teacher, and he got an iPod at the end of the school year from his graduating seniors, complete with a special engraving on the back. I dropped it this morning, and now theres a blank chunk and a black streak across the screen. It still works...I just can't see half the stuff on the screen! I know I can buy a new screen, but once Iv got that, I have NO idea how to get rid of the old one and put in the new one. Im sorta technologically challenged (stuck in the days of records and vinyl)...can anybody explain to me how to install a new screen in an easy-to-understand manner? Please help me...if I cant fix this my dad will slaughter me.

For all you folks who are as upset as I over the lack of Apple support, please go to my website www.ipodwarranty.com and follow the instructions on filing a complaint with the BBB and FTC. If enough of us file complaints something will be done. There's also a link to a great place to get your ipod fixed. Very fast turn around time.

We've been in business since 1994 (since before Netscape was a browser and Amazon existed). We've opened up an iPod repair division - iPodResQ, and have since become the #1 iPod repair company in the world.

We're unofficially recommended by all the Apple Stores every day - and growing! Most of our pricing includes a box with a prepaid label overnighted to you to get it to us - we call you when it arrives with a diagnosis (unless it's prepaid, like an LCD or the like), and if the repair's approved we fix it and overnight it back (return shipping is also included with our pricing).

Check us out - we do everything from data recovery and headphone jack repair to LCD and hard drive replacements! We even repair logic boards!

Look for our own branded higher-capacity iPod batteries soon!

My son bought his IPOD 4g 40 GIG last July, This Aug it started acting really odd. It would not sync with the PC and it would lock up a lot. We tried everything to get it to work. Finally I read somewhere that if this happens to let the battery drain down until it quits, and then try again. This seemed to work at first it did sync up. But within a day it started acting up again.

I found a main board on EBAY for $15 and bought it. At first I was very reluctant to replace it since the Ipod cost so much, but I figured what the heck.

It took about 15 minutes to replace it. It has been working for the last week.

These units are easy to work on. You just have to use a little caution with the ribbons.

I can open the case now with only making one very small mark on the side.

Apple has some serious problems with reliability and their repair costs are a joke.

There are a lot of parts on EBAY. Don’t be afraid of trying to fix the IPOD yourself. Once you open it you will see that it is not that hard to do.

My apple iPod mini 4gb Gen 2 lasted not even 1 day!!! The lcd screen no longer functions its completely blank. Though everything else works. Luckily i bought a best buy performance service plan for 49.99, cheaper than apple support. and i got an extra year on the warranty. thats 3 years. So if i had one piece of advice to anyone here is to NOT buy the apple service plan but if a local computer store offers it, you should buy their service plan. its probably more reliable and u don't have to ship the ipod half way across the country you can just take it to the place where u bought the service plan (as well as the ipod.)

My iPod's hard drive died yesterday. All I hear is a bunch of whirring and clicking as if the iPod became retarded.

Good game.

Posted by: Dat Le at August 31, 2005 08:20 PM

my 14 year old sons ipod that he worked hard for was'ent warranted because of very small dent in back. That was protected by of course ipod hard cover purchased from Ipod, made by Ipod.

Took for repair the repair person asked me what we expected for $200 dollars, my son has had a creative lab payer for Three year that he snowboard and skateboard with. Never had a problem. cost of fixing is same as new one

This product should not be sold to active people. I hate to say it! I should have listen

to my wife.

As much as I love my Powerbook, the iPod (mine just stopped working right outside the warranty period) seems to have quality control issues.

The scroll wheel is finicky too, and I had to reset it a lot.

Back to the iRiver -- with quality headphones (say, Shure e3c's), the iRiver outputs much better and more adjustable sound anyway. I just miss the iTunes integration.

Posted by: Michael at September 3, 2005 09:50 AM

Problem with waranty and even the extended is, is that it only covers manufacturing errors. The minute you drop it or the company suspects you are the one at fault (dent etc) they won't fix it.

Don't buy the extended plans, they are a rip-off. At least until they start fixing things that break in real life, LCD/Hard Drive etc.

Just save the money and have your iPod fixed by one the many company's out there.

Posted by: Ramon Richie at September 3, 2005 08:53 PM

Might as well add our iPod cracked screen experience. Yesterday one month after purchase my son's new 20G LCD screen cracked. It broke apparently while in his pants pocket, in the car (windows open)while he was surfing. It was not dropped, thrown around or banged in any way we know of.

Apple's response is that a cracked screen is evidence of accidental or intended (abuse)impact, thus voiding the warranty even if there is no damage to the case. If the hard drive is broken, however, the warrantry is only voided if there is case damage.

I would say this is an example of poor construction or design if the case does not protect the screen from reasonable handling. Apple, by not even recording the incident is basically denying they may have a problem. But the fact that every sales person to whom I talked in the San Jose Apple store, all the way up the store manager, had a similar canned response implies that cracked LCD problems are commonplace.

I'v had my iPod for 6 months now and i saved up so much for it that i didnt want it to break so i bought a cover for it and everything. I carried it with me at all times in my handbag in the small zip pocket. then one day i pulled it out of my bag and the screen was leaking. My mobile was in my bag also and that's fine! I do not swing my bag around or chuck it on the floor. I never dropped it and yet it broke! From reading reviews i guess i cannot get my warrenty so i now have so save again. It took me my whole summer holidays and now.... i don't know. I so upset i didnt even do anything. I read people saying they dropped it on concrete or trod on it but i haven't even done that. So im looking for a screen i suppose for my 6gb. Anyone got one?

Unit is still under warranty but it's going to cost me £35(I live in UK) just for Apple to take it in under warranty and after reading the comments on here, it appears that the warranty may be worthless anyway!.Their customer service is abysmal and certainly wont be buying their products again.

Hello everybody. I came up with this website, looking for iPod repair and fix information on google. This is my story.

Six months ago, I had a fire in my apartment, one room only. The ipod was in the room next to it, so fire absolutely did not harm it, it looks absolutely fine like brand new...but when I put it to charge the battery, the computer will not recognize it, even will not say " a new hardware is found", just no reaction AT ALL. The ipod is not turning on, I do not know what is the problem. Damned, I am so upset, it was a 20 GBT one.

Posted by: Jamila at October 2, 2005 07:45 PM

Well Jamila, I believe I've had the same problem. Try holding down the center and 'menu' buttons while it is on the charger. This will reset it, and might cause your computer to recognize it.

I too, have a problem. How much would it cost to get the LCD screen fixed? The outside covering is fine, however, the inside is cracked and has black substance all around. How much would it cost if my iPod is under warranty?

Thanks in advance.

My third generation also had hard drive failure a year and a half after I bought it (the dreaded exclamation mark). I did not drop my ipod, etc - it actually failed right after an itunes upgrade - go figure. I called Apple, who only wanted to talk to me if I paid $25 or so to ask them a question (though I could ask related questions for a week). The tech took pity on me, and for no charge told me the unit was dead, but I could get a refurbished for $295 including shipping. I bought a used hd on ebay and fixed it myself for $80. The case was a bear to remove, but the HD installation was simple. Regardless, the unit should last for more than a year and a half. Seems to me there are lots of hd failures - what's up with this? Even so, have to admit, I would buy another iPod.

I had sent my ipod photo to get fixed. i looked on the apple website to see if it was fixed. the screen said that they were not going to repair it. i phoned apple and asked why thay would not repart my ipod. the lady said that the screen was broken and they dont fix that kind of stuff. but the funny thing it when i sent them the ipod the screen was compleatly fine in 100% working condishion. so between my house and apple it was busted. i tred to tell the lady that but her and her superviser thought i was full of shit.

i think that we should do something about this and make apple cover the lcd screens of the ipods because now im our $550 Canadian and to get some to put a new one in it will cost me $170 US

i think that this is a bull shit and should make the screens stronger

Posted by: Jared at October 14, 2005 09:34 PM

I bought my 4th Gen Apple iPod on December 17th 2004, and got it just in time for christmas. I bought a protective case for it too. I took it everywhere and have to date never dropped it. The screen managed to break itself while in my pocket one day at school between classes. I took out the ipod and in dismay i saw it broken, with a bit of the "lcd blue gew of death" about the sixe of the apple logo. for the most part, the screen worked, and i resumed the rest of my day, with my half broken 1 month old ipod. i got on the phone that night, and waited on hold for about 20-30 min. with another 30 min on the phone with the level 1 techie, i was told to fill out a form on apples repair site, and a box will be sent to me. the box was sent promptly, and i sent my ipod on its way to repair hell. i got it back 3 weeks later, and the screen was now totaly broken, and a complimentary bullsh!t letter was enclosed, saying it was my fault n blah blah blah. i got on the phone and called apple the next day, and asked to talk to someone higher than the level 1 dude. i was greeted by aaron, a kind service tech. after a 20 min "chat" he guarenteed me apple would repair it for free... another box of doom... 1 month of waiting... now i got it back, just the lcd was not fixed, and the minor "lcd blue gew of death was occupying 3/4 of my screen, and was shaped like a crab, and another bullsh!t letter. now i have had my ipod for almost 3 months, just about the end of future shop repair time, and i had a brilliant idea, try and return it, with the screen face down! after waiting for almost 30 min in line, i was kindly greated by the nice repair lady, and we went through the return process. she checked over many things, and it almost worked, but when she went to key in the exchange, the copmuter said "contact apple" so she did, and got a first hand look at their service. she was hung up and put on hold 3 times, and was truly gettin very frusterated. she got through on the 4th try, and was told to give me the phone (a 14 year old with a lonely paper rout who saved up for about 1 year) and was told that apple wont repair it, and no warranty will fix it! 1 years worth of saving and $500 CDN after tax down the drain!!! well, atleast i have all the cables, and it works on shuffle, but apple isnt good for SH!T. oh wait, they are good for breaking the ipod even more than it already is!

Lessons learnt:

dont buy apple-service is crap

dont buy future shop-service isnt as bad as apples, but worse than best buy in canada

dont buy extended warranty from apple-waste of money

dont drop ipod, or it will break, guarenteed

dont think that even though someone says it will be fixed, it will be fixed, and in a timely manner

TO THOSE WITH A FOLDER WITH AN EXCLAMATION MARK ON THE SCREEN

After digging onapples support there are a few things you can do-

Charge

The battery may be low. Charge the battery by connecting iPod to your computer using the cable that came with iPod, or by connecting to an Apple iPod Power Adapter. Verify that the iPod is receiving a charge by looking for a lighting bolt icon or charging animation. Click here for more charging information.

Reset

The iPod may have locked up. Reset iPod.

Restore

Some iPod models require a specific or later version of iPod software. The iPod may have been partitioned or reformatted using an incompatible format. Restore the iPod using the latest version of the iPod Updater application.

Service

If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.

People on ebay are selling services such as lcd repair, and i would suggest looking into emailing the seller or ipod parts to see if they are selling lcd's repairs. i was able to contact one, and offered it totaly repaired for $195 CDN Cash. I have decided not to fork over the cash, and plan to live with this oversized and overpriced paper weight

Whom it may concern,

I purchased an ipod (serial Nº JQ433ADWP ) on 28.08.04 in Hong Kong paying the necessary extra fees to secure an international guarantee. I was extremely happy with product and subsequently purchased a skin and the JBL On Stage Speakers. Unfortunately the ipod developed a fault and so I took it to the official ipod centre in Barcelona (Address: C/Muntaner 537-541 Barcelona ) on 03.05.05. They sent it to Amsterdam and I received a report (enclosed report entitled Justificante de depósito PARTE Nº 74535B) saying the hard disc was damaged.

My ipod (serial Nº JQ433ADWP), presumably damaged beyond repair, was then replaced by ipod (serial Nº 2Z5191ULPQ7).

Ipod serial Nº 2Z5191ULPQ7

In August of this year my work once again took me to Hong Kong. Whilst “on-the-go” with my present ipod the model started to skip songs whilst in play or would play the first 30 seconds then jump to the next. I took the model to the customer assistance & Technical Support centre in the RBS Tower, Time Square, Causeway Bay. Unfortunately I was due to go on holiday and I was informed that my remaining stay in Hong Kong was of insufficient length to be seen by a technician and that I would have to wait for my return to Spain.

Meanwhile the state of the product deteriorated and a folder sign with an exclanation mark kept on appearing after the apple sign then switching itself off. This repeated itself until the battery was depleted. I followed online advice and steps to deal with this fault to no avail. For my subsequent holiday I was left without the advantages of an ipod but with the disadvantage of having to carry it and its accessories around with me. I found this extremely frustrating.

I returned to Spain on 22. 09. 05 and returned to the official ipod centre in Barcelona immediately upon my return. They requested the forms they’d given me on prior occasions and having just moved house at the end of July it took me a week and considerable effort and inconvenience to locate them.

Returning to the store with the necessary forms they then told me that they could not replace nor repair this model and I received an unsatisfactory explanation. In fact they informed me that the damage was probably caused by wearing the ipod in my pocket and the little knocks it received from my legs moving against it, over time, may well have caused the damage. I found the ensuing argument with the shop very frustrating and I have been unable to find a place with which to address my problem and complaint

I use my ipod for personal pleasure as well as within the classroom and I was in the process of writing an instruction manual entitled "ipod in the classroom". Unfortunately due to my recent experience this project has been shelved for the immediate future and I have informed Cambridge University Press of the the situation.

I would have been willing to accept a replacement if I had received an adequate explanation of the cause of the fault enabling me to take due care of my ipod in the future. However I believe an upgrade to the colour model with the same capacity is the least Apple could do to offset the considerable trouble and inconvenience I have suffered. I would also like to know if the reason offered by the staff in the Spanish branch is the official ipod stand on this product. If so, I would appreciate this in writing as I have been unable to find such a statement in any Apple literature.

If a replacement is not forthcoming then I would like to receive a written explanation and information on how I can recuperate the losses I have incurred from purchasing the product and its accessories.

Yours Sincerely,

(Mr.) Kyle Mawer

There is a perfectly logical explanation for all of this.

Consumer electronics are mostly mass-produced and assembled by sophisticated machinery in vast quantities, therby reducing their cost. Machines can operate in the dark in unheated factories, they never get bored, never call in sick or go on strike. Well rarely anyway.

Repairing consumers electronics is extremely fiddly and labour-intensive, requiring humans to be employed. Humans expect to be paid, to work in a comfortable heated or air-conditioned environment. They expect to be paid when they are sick or on holiday. The repairs themselves are particularly tricky and lenghty operations precisely *because* the units have been assembled by machines. Machines can perform routine tasks with utter prescision at great speed, which helps to make modern electronic devices small and compact. Unfortunately, this makes them difficult to service by humans with our large clumsy fingers and our relatively crude brains ;-)

Many many years ago (well around 20 years ago), you would take a television set to a repair shop, because it cost a fortune to replace, compared to the cost of repair. Nowadays, almost the complete reverse is true. The benefit is that you can buy very cheap but very sophisticated electronic gadgets today, but the disadvantage is that such items must be considered disposable.

If you like, we could go back to the old system, but I'll bet your brand new hand-assembled, easily -servicable iPod would costs you twice or possibly three times as much and would be two or three times the size.

3 months out of warranty, and kaput. I strongly advise anyone lucky enough to read this post BEFORE the thing goes into paperweight mode: Buy the $60 AppleCare package. It's a lot cheaper than $255 to "replace" unit, and much nicer than standing in the Apple store in Soho, NYC, trying not to throttle the smug little bastard behind the counter when he tells you smilingly to "not even bother" fixing it--just get a new one. Apple can run all the "switch" commercials they like; but my experience with their customer service is much more persuasive. They could be using the iPod to give customers an amazing experience that would make it a "no-brainer" to switch from Windows to OS-X, instead they treat you like a shmuck--"Thanks for the $300, buddy, now f*** off".

My 4th generation ipod was having trouble with the earbuds. i told the people at apple that when i plugged headphones into the ipod only one side worked but when i plugged the same headphones into another appliance both headphones worked so the problem definently wasnt the headphones. Apples response...send me new headphones!?!?!? And by the time i got them i had already bought a new 5th generation ipod because it had taken them so long. Now my 5th generation ipod's screen is scratched because they released a product WITH NO CASE?!?!?! I love ipods but at this point i feel like they just totally disregarded their customers

I have a 4gb, Ipod ...the little round pad is stuck...my fault..I wore it while riding the lawn mower, and I am sure there is dust/dirt under the "click wheel" it is depressed, and won't go into different selections.. I feel if I was able to open it, I can blow out the dust with computer dust remover..but can't get open...how do you open one of these things? I would appreciate any help...Gary

My 16 year old son and 14 year old nephew both bought ipods with their own money and both had the hard drive break just outside the warranty period. It is a shame to sell such an expensive product to children when the product obviously was built to only last for a year. My son told me that all of his friends at school have had the hard drives go on their ipods as well. One boy was wearing his ipod buds with his cd player so he could look "rich" These kids cannot afford to purchase a new ipod every year and it is so dissapointing as even ski jackets now come with an ipod pocket instead of the cd player pocket. Since apple obviously knows that these machines break easily they should lease them for $300 a year instead of selling them. Then the customer would know the true cost of being an ipod owner.

same sad story; pod went bust. had to take my orginal 4th gen pod to the apple store 3 times. i finally threw a fit (wondering aloud to every manager in the place 'til they couldn't take it any more) what the point is of purchasing a pod if it's gonna reside in their repair department. have a new pod and the thing is a dead n useless (but attractively designed) hunk of white plastic. and that's with a protective case that the apple guys referred to as the "fort knox". 1 year old, in beautiful condition and dead, dead, dead. thank you so very much apple for standing behind your...oh wait, can't even finish that one. i worry; what if my G5 goes bust?

Anyone selling a glass for iPod Mini, If your iPod mini is broken please take it apart and sell screen 2 me.

Posted by: CWEEZY-IN-STL at December 2, 2005 11:24 PM

My iPod MIni Second Generation has broken two times in terms of what's inside. This time, 3 days after I got another replacement the glass broke when I sat down. Apple costs 2 much 2 repair this product so looking for someone with no use 4 iPod Mini 2 open up their hearts (and iPod Minis!) and sell glass to me.

I'm sick of everyone bitching about iPod's delicacy. As I write this my 2 week old 40g 4th gen iPod is sitting on my desk with a destroyed screen. You can actually see black fluid on the screen, and it's cracked from behind. I first got a similar iPod in January this year and it stopped working mid october. So I backed up my hard drive, sent it in to apple and I had a brand new one within 2 weeks. Then I fell down the stairs with the iPod in my pocket and the screen broke. This is not apple's fault, I was the one who broke it.....why should they have to replace it for my carelessness? Maybe I'm just being passive because I did the smart thing and got my iPod put on my HOUSE INSURANCE (free replacement), but of course if you're gonna mistreat an iPod it's going to break. Also, someone said apple products were "too delicate for the target market". I'm pretty sure the target market is the people who can afford to buy one in the first place, and those who know how to take care of it. And the phone comparisons are ridiculous, most motorolla phones are flip ones, and any other phone has a normal plastic protector over the screen. Would Nokia or nintendo replace their products if it was because you gave a highly sensitive piece of equipment to a kid and they broke it through misuse? I think not

DO YOU NEED HELP WITH YOUR BROKEN iPOD?

I fix ipods privately and if anyone needs help I am on msn with pederjay@hotmail.com. Many iPod problems are just software, and can be fixed through email, so if you have a problem, just email me! I also will fix any other problems you may have with your iPod, if you are willing to pay for parts and shipping. My labour costs are VERY reasonable. Just email me with your iPod generation and problem!

Apple is clearly making a killing out of deliberately releasing a hard drive based mp3 player that breaks after 1 year ( just outside warranty period ). My 4G has just broken - hard drive failure. Personally i think the idea of using hard drives for portable music playing is flawed, as the technology is not designed for being moved about as it reads data. The sooner large capacity solid state ipods become standard the better. Frankly i think Apple should be exposed as purely working to exploit their market share and force everyone to repurchase. They have even change the accessory plugs on the new iPods. - so everyone has to buy new remotes.

Yet again - Apple dont allow anyone to fix their own problems with the hardware ( or software ) so they can force people to buy new / pay massive amounts for the "apple experts" ( people who have been told simple secrets ) to "fix" it.

All of this proves - that Apple are now just a fancy case manufacturer / or poor illogical functionality lacking OS manufacturer ( of course convered in RAM hungry CPU hungry "design" ).. which only have 1 thing going for them - "cool"

By the way - any apple lovers out there - i think the iPod is their best product ever. But it only wins the mp3 player war by default. Sony, Creative and the others are all just as bad if not worse.

My ipod stopped working. It just wouldn't turn on. I went to the Apple site (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ip_gettingstarted_t16.html)& followed their simple instructions:

After making sure your iPod is fully charged, try any of these five suggestions if you have a problem with your iPod.

Reset your iPod by toggling the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, and then turn it off again). Then press and hold the Center and Menu buttons for at least 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

AND IT WORKED!!!

Very happy customer.

(The other four suggestions are on the site but I only needed to try the first).

The only way to get Apple to change their way is to hit them in the pocketbook. Start a boycott of Ipods and tell all your friends about your experience. Contact the Green Party and tell them about the waste of resources; at a time when we are asked to recycle our waste products, we are throwing $300 ipods away... Ask Consumer Union to test the ipod for reliability and compare them to other MP3 players on the market. They are problably doing that anyway. If it can be proven that Apple design obselescence into its products and refuse to repair them, it would be a big blow to their reputation.

Hi,

I have a i pod mini, smashed screen, you can still see some of it, the ipod still works, wanting to sell it cost me too much to send to us to get fixed (i am in oz) have the original box, earphone a itrip and all the disks it is under a year old any one wanting to buy contact me

Posted by: Aly at December 8, 2005 06:24 AM

i'm sure this is a run-o' the mill "my pod doesn't work any longer; help!" type story, only without the "help!" (it doesn't really work) but i'm posting anyway. i believe companies should stand behind the products that they make and this hasn't been my full experience at apple. i worry that my G5 is next to go bust, and my apple care plan no longer comforts me.

i bought the pod in september of last year, a 4thGen 40 gig. i would not even carry the thing or use it till i had a protective case (the one dubbed "fort knox" by the ipod geniuses at the local apple store). it went bust almost immediately, anyway, refusing to play, freezing up, etc. spent all of it's time in the store, being "repaired" (and by repaired i mean that a restore was performed on it). finally, after my frustration reached an all-time high (and it takes a bit for me to get to this point) i complained sufficiently to a sufficient number of people and got the thing replaced. i was in heaven. that is, till i was sitting with the pod, perfectly still (i.e. let's not try to blame this on bangs and falls, etc; this pod is spottless and scratch free) and it just stopped. all stopped save the loud whirring of the hard drive. that's gone so i'm out

$400 for the pod

$35 protective case

$? accessories, etc

$20 to ship to ipodmods for diagnosis

they said that they can fix it for $200 or pay me $35 for it. i said to ship it back; is how the story goes and i now have a one very expensive paperweight.

i don't want to be someone who just complains, but i do wanna get this out there, even if it only stays up for a day or so 'till apple finds and removes it. it's just that i am an ordinary (read; not able to pay for another pod so soon after i bought the first one) person with a great love of and a great disappointment in apple and this product. there is no reason that i should be out all that money and have nothing to shop; i took exceptional care of that ipod. i researched it, saved the money, was terrifically happy and having the ipod was truly a lifestyle thing. i recommended it to everyone i came across, strangers or no. now i want another one but am not about to pay; this story is too common amongst my friends and the online community (by now i've read sob story after...) and i can't pay that to have another one die on me.

Posted by: ivy at December 12, 2005 01:06 PM

I've been dealing with the Apple Community forums for a couple of weeks now. My post last night about how Nikon is voluntarily recalling a whole slew of camera batteries because 4 people have had them malfunction was removed. My post today about last night's post has been locked. Apple doesn't want to hear our sob stories about our slightly-out-of-warranty iPods. As much as I love the ease of iTunes, I'll NEVER again buy another Apple product.

Hi, I just bought a broken 20Gb 3rd gen Ipod off of ebay. The person said the screen still works but whenever you hit a button it displays an error message with an exclamation mark. I am looking for a fix or a person who will it buy it from me for a reasonable price. Thanks

I just got the 'sad ipod' icon on my 4G 20GB ipod yesterday. I have spent over an hour on the phone with apple technical support saying nothing can be done because it is out of warranty, purchase an extended care package, another $60, or to go to an Apple store, which is over 2 hours away. The minimum cost they quoted was $250 to repair it. All they are trying to do is sell you some more services that you really don't need if they did their jobs properly and manufactured their products to last. The last technical rep I spoke with said that only 5% of their products malfunction, which is totally false.

OUT OF THE 3500 ODD SONGS I HAD ON IT, NONE OF THEM WOULD WORK!!! THEN IT FROZE ALTOGETHER!!! I HAD TO WAIT FOR THE BATTERY TO RUN FLAT OVERNIGHT AND I TRIED TO CHARGE IT, IT IS DEAD!!! Regarding comment above. I am now happy because of the one piece of advice Apple provides on their site for problematic iPods.

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ip_gettingstarted_t16.html

Reset your iPod by toggling the Hold switch on and then off (set it to Hold, and then turn it off again). Then press and hold the Center and Menu buttons for at least 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I feel sorry for all who don't have answers to your iPod problems.

IF YOU HAVE AN IPOD, GET A THICK, SOFT, ABSORBING CASE EG SILICONE!!! HARD CASES STILL TRANSFER MOST OF THE SHOCK OF A FALL!!!

I too purchased a 4th generation 40 gig Ipod. I year and two weeks after getting it I turned it on only to see a folder and an exclamation point. The hard drive clicks and whirs just as many people have described. I did everything on the apple support sight except completely restore the ipod but not because I didn't try becuase when I did I got a pop up that said hard disk failure! No kidding. My Ipod is useless. I don't even want to spend the money to try and fix it. I will never buy Apple again. My sister had the same thing happen to hers and her friends had the screen blotch which Apple did not fix. Another friend had his completely die as well but he did get Apple to send him a new one but then that one broke as well. Am I seeing a pattern here. This is a warning DO NOT BUY AN Ipod. Dosn't it strike anyone that apples troubleshooting sight has about a million suggestions on how to fix the ipod yourself. That is because they wont. Also why so many suggestons on the website? Because everyone's breaks. They are too fragile and even if you make them last more than a year then they break soon after. Apple has a monopoly. Please don't let it continue.

Wow you know I thought I was the only one that loved Apple's products, but hated their service. The first 4th gen I bought had a hardware problem. I sent it in and they send me a refurbished one with a 30-day warranty. On about the 32nd day, I was having hardware issues. FUCK APPLE! So after learning about the $250 repair fee, the salesperson suggested I simply buy a new one. Like they ACTUALLY think that I'm gonna buy shit from Apple again. HA.

Anyways. I have a 40GB 4th generation with hardware problems, but the case is in good condition. I also have two cases. email me if you're interested in buying...

I plugged it in, and nothing came up on the screen. This was the first time it's happened. Does anyone know what the problem could be? or possibly *how much it would cost to fix?

I had an ipod. I enjoyed it while it worked. The screen stopped functioning 2 months out-of-warranty. I tried every tech remedy known. I tried to find a reasonable repair, but this costs as much as a new unit. Apple could care less about it, they're raking in millions on ipods. So I propose a new weapon in the war on terror. Give the ipods to terrorists, let 'em settle it with the ipod execs. Then go out and buy a more reliable, better-supported Iriver.

Posted by: Hairy Podder at February 2, 2006 02:23 AM

My Ipod is, and will always be, a terrible purchase. Apple should be f'ing ashamed of themselves. Unfortunately, they're not. They're reaping in shitloads of money and have their heads shoved so far up their own asses that they can't see (and don't care) that they're ripping off their previously loyal customers. Or maybe they can see. Whatever. I'm going back to vinyl and the good old Walkman.

Just got an ipod nano for christmas. Screen cracked just a bit in the corner, apple wants 250 for the repair so I didn't send it in. Now the whole screen has gone blank. What a scam this is, why can't apple make a half decent product for once. They are clearly making big bucks off of this. Hopefully someone else comes out with a durable, affordable mp3 player and wipes apple right out of the market.

I will never buy another apple product.

Wow. I can't believe how many people on here are whiny little b*tches! I love the one comment where the guy lost his receipt and expected Best

Buy to give him a new one. I'm not a huge best buy fan... but take some responsibility and stop blaming best buy for not replacing the receipt that YOU LOST! moron. And the kid who broke his screen but assumed that it magically broke itself. Dumbass. This is the problem with western society... we don't like to take responsibility for our own actions. it's easier to blame apple, or best buy, or anyone but ourselves. Stop whining about the broken ipod and spend your time working to pay it off instead of wasting it by posting pathetic stories on here!!!

Posted by: Frank at February 28, 2006 01:25 PM

Frank you are right about respsonsibility. However taking responsibility for your own actions is a huge problem with corporations and not just consumers. If in fact there are other companies who can repair ipods for a cheaper price than apple, if apple were to take responsibility for their product, as you say they should, then apple should be able to provide a repair service for a respectable cost.

The thing that pisses me off was that in December 2005 i was supposedly given a "brand new U2 ipod" to exchange for my old defective ipod. That was because my warranty was covered. Now after 3 months plus the "new" Ipod died on me. Apparently i did not purchase their extended warranty thats why i dont get a replacement. I got the video iPod this last December and the screen jacked itself up (or maybe i did) and it was only 3 months old. So i went to the apple store and those "geniuses" told me that they wouldnt do anything! What kind of a warranty is that? They dont guarantee anything. So now i am expected to spend the same amount as the orginal ipod cost just to get it fixed! This is insane!

A one year life-span?!?! It sure seems to be more common than not. How many IPods do you think apple would sell if they made it clear that the product was only designed to last a year. I believe Apple is designing a short-life product to maximize their profits. How about an survey campaign to find out just how common this one-year phenomenon really is?

It's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease.

Possible Interpretation: Those that are helped are not the best.

Possible Interpretation: A need kept a secret will never be addressed.

(Cynically) Can be taken further as encouragement to complain about things in order to get your way.

Can anyone out there HELP. I have a 3rd gen 20 gb ipod that has a lock switch that is stuck. I move it back and forth but still no luck. I'm sure apple will charge me more than I paid to get it fixed. Anyone else have this problem?

Posted by: fiona at April 8, 2006 08:48 AM

My iPod 3rd gen crashed,it makes repetitive ticking sound and the lights doesn't turn on. I have important data i want to recover is it possible? please guide me through it, help me. its my life.

DO NOT SEND YOUR IPOD TO IPODMECHANICS, THEY WILL STEAL IT AND NOT GIVE IT BACK. THEY ARE A COMPLETE SCAM, LOOK:

I just got my new iPod mini as a x-mas gift. It was working fine for about a month or two, but sometimes it would freeze up and i would let it sit there and die then charge itback up and it would be fine. Well one morning i was turning it off and it froze up on me. I havent touched the thing for about a year now. And i dont know what to do with it. Should I just throw it away or get it fixed. PLEASE HELP!! thanks ~Mandy~

im am so pissed off with apple....

i bought my 2nd gen ipod last year and now it broken. i live in nz and they made me ring 8 different places and all they could tell me was to get a new one.....

apparantly they dont fix there own products if the hardware has failed which im not even sure that it has.......

F*** APPLE!!

Posted by: Pissed OFF at June 9, 2006 12:21 AM

look people, it's very easy to correct most ipod problems. go to www.apple.com/support. do the 5 r's. if you don't care enough to take 5 minutes to rest or restore your ipod, you don't deserve to have one. Also don't bitch because you dropped, or ran into something and you cracked your screen or dented your case to the extent your ipod stopped working-and now you feel upset and betrayed because apple won't subsidize your idiocy. treat your ipod like a computer and not a ten dollar walkman and it'll last a lot longer.

Posted by: boo at June 13, 2006 01:10 AM

help...i hope my ipod gets fixed:(here's to you god:)

After requesting a repair (cracked screen from library book falling on it), I was told by Apple to buy a new ipod. If I got it repaired elsewhere (that I could afford), the warranty would be void if anything else EVER happened to the ipod. AppleCare is a joke(kind of like auto insurance in SE PA).

To all you morons defending Apple, there is a way to corner the market AND make money - it's called customer service. Ever tried to talk to a live person at Apple? I'm tired of hitting one and holding. When you eventually get one, it's a summer intern taking orders, who told me repeatedly "I don't know anything about that - would you like to send it in?". But, like I heard years ago - "we're the phone company, we don't care - we don't have to".

Why make us continue to susidize Apple's idiocy - these devices should be more robust. How often do you cart your PC around while in use, stupid(in fact, I have dropped my PC while moving it and it survived- ok, it wasn't on!)? I suppose ipod use should consist of carefully listening to the device from that chair in the living room - that's not what they were made for, apple-bitch.

My new Rio isn't as trendy, but it plays music, and will be replaced or repaired at a MUCH better rate should it break.

I know it's a terrible thing when events "beyond your control" happen and they crack the screen of your ipod and , amazingly, apple won't fix the damage that you caused. god that's terrible. i really feel for you. really, i cry at night about this. i don't know of one company that repairs customers damage for free. And i don't understand why people are so upset when apple won't do repairs for free. I understand that it sucks that you spent a significant amount of money on an ipod but if you drop it in an ocean or crash your car or if your "library book" drops on it, that is customer damage and no company i know will subsidize damage like that. it's your fault. deal with it.

my nano got wet and now it does not want to turn on. am i doomed to buy another one?

Posted by: maddie at June 18, 2006 12:13 AM

i know exactly how you feel. i left my ipod to sit in a case in a bag and a few hours, when i came back, the screen had cracked. it is under warranty (it broke after about 5 months), but when i went in to the apple store (after much aggravation with the apple people and making an appointment) the man told me i had 3 options. although the ipod is under warranty, apple does not cover cracked screens:

1 - recyle it thorugh ipod and get 10% off a new ipod

2 - get it repaired through the apple store

3 - get it repaired online through a third party or sell it to a third party for around $50-$75 so they can use the parts for other broken ipods.

i was infuriated. my ipod broke after 5 months and it was not my fault. if i drop my cell phone (which i paid nothing for) or my camera (which was half the price of my ipod) it doesnt break, but leaving my ipod in a bag for a few hours destroys it. i'm 16 and my income is not very large. i thought i paid $300 for a durable music player, not a paperweight.

I have an ipod mini, and a couple months ago the headphones stopped working. Does anyone know why that might be, or around how much it would be to fix it?

I seem to have the same devastating problem as many of you. Third generation ipod that simply quit! It is clicking inside, the exclamation mark came up, and it doesn't play songs. It was a year and a half old. I am so attatched to it that I am sure I will replace it, but this is a SHAM! Why is nothing being done about this wipe-spread problem, and how can this company get away with this complete and utter SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
