This Is Broken - Green stop sign

I remember in drivers ed the instructor saying that (in the US) the only road sign in the shape of an octagon is a stop sign. "So even if you encounter a green sign with the letter G-O on it, if it is an octagon, you need to stop".

Nonetheless, I'm guessing this particular sign is this color to fit in with some color scheme which doesn't make it any less moronic.

Actually, people's eyes work so that green is the most noticable color. Not a green like this, more of a lime green, but many signs, fire trucks, etc. that used to be red are now being made green so people see them easier. Of course, we could have been warned this was going to happen.

I could be wrong about this, but I always assumed that when stop signs in apartment complexes, shopping center parking lots, etc., weren't to standard street sign design, that had something to do with either a) the law (it isn't an actual road and the people putting up the sign don't have the authority to put up an official sign) or b) money (the owners of the parking lot didn't feel like buying an official sign from the sign warehouse). Or some combination of a) and b), with a dash of c) color scheme, as suggested by Derek, above.

Anyone else? Someone with knowledge of the applicable laws, perhaps?

(In full agreement w/ Heather that no matter what, green =/= stop; *sheesh!*)

I've seen signs like this in Waco, TX too, so I know it's not a fake. I think these are just made by people to encourage people to stop. So, perhaps it's not a against the law to run them?

I see these sometimes in apartment complex parking lots or shopping malls. The great thing about these is that, since they're private property, they don't have to abide by signage laws. Also, you can't be pulled over for running a stop sign on private property or violating the speed limit in a shopping mall lot!

I'm fairly certain the sign can't be red because it's not an "official" state/county-issued stop sign, as silly as that regulation is. Might have something to do with what the local constabulary are required to enforce.

Of course, just because police don't enforce them doesn't mean that they're great to ignore. Other folks who obey the signage and should have the right of way will be heading through without expecting others to run it, oddly-colore or not, so the drivers ed instructor has a good point on this.

Or as a driving teacher of mine used to say, sure, you'll be right -- dead right.

A local trailer court did the exact same thing, to match the street signs. Best part is, they are frequently stolen. Imagine the call to the police:

Trailer court: "I wish to report a stolen stop sign, it's about 16 inches wide and green in color"

Police: "Please read me the label on the bottle you are drinking from, sir."

You'll see these signs on privately-owned property. There's a silly law that says only the government can erect red ones. (This law is broken.)

There is no law that prohibits using a standard stop sign, or any other standard traffic control device, on private property. Those who use nonstandard traffic signs, or standard signs in nonstandard ways, are simply ignorant.

Aren't red and green the two colours that colour-blind people get mixed up? My bet is the sign painter was colour blind.

I've seen a lot of "official" neon gree stop signs in Colorado. Personally, I recognize them easier and they catch my eye quicker than the standard signs do. They reflect light easier and are easier to spot.

In Hawaii, where I live, it is illegal to have a red stop sign on private property. Chances are that this sign is just following a similar, if silly law.
