Broken: XBox error message

Nowak writes:

Here's an error message from my XBox. It reads, "This is an Xbox game disc. Please put it in your Xbox to start playing." At least they were kind enough to write out the same error in multiple languages.

Comments:

Ok, so what's broken?

Posted by: Name: at May 24, 2004 12:12 AM

I think what's broken is that it was an Xbox that produced this message. Maybe it was a modded Xbox?

Posted by: :Name at May 24, 2004 02:10 AM

Either that or it was recognized as a video DVD instead of a game DVD, perhaps because the game data area was unreadable, corrupted, etc.

Posted by: Karl at May 24, 2004 03:30 AM

> Ok, so what's broken?

Why would the Xbox itself ever need to produce a message that instructs a user to place the disc in the Xbox?

Whether or not the Xbox is modded or whether the disc is unreadable is irrelevant. Does the message itself make any sense?

1. The message comes from the Xbox.

2. The Xbox admits that it has a game disc in it.

3. The Xbox says to put the disc in an Xbox, which obviously already has been done...

So really, what logical purpose would such a message ever serve? And if there is a purpose, is that message clear enough to serve it well?

Posted by: James at May 24, 2004 04:36 AM

James: I think the message is being produced by an extra DVD-video section on the disc, so if you put it into a DVD player by accident, you'd get that message.

Posted by: Alden Bates at May 24, 2004 07:10 AM

Basically, some part of the disc is damaged so the xbox is not recognizing it as a game. And for some reason, it can reach the VideoCD/DVD section and it is displaying that instead.

The message itself is not broken. It's actually a very good idea, because it will help you figure out what's wrong if you ever insert the disc on a DVD Player.

Posted by: Sebastian at May 24, 2004 10:12 AM

Hmm. I think that's the message you get if you put an XBOX disc into a Playstation 2.

Because I did that once.

I could be wrong...

Posted by: Mr. Nosuch at May 24, 2004 10:58 AM

Ah! Okay. If the message comes from the disc itself, then it does make sense. :)

Posted by: James at May 24, 2004 12:54 PM

You are correct, Mr. Nosuch. AFAIK, this error displays itself on any type of DVD player (including the PS2) that isn't an Xbox (or in this case, it is displayed on a Xbox, because other sections of the disc cannot be read, so it skips to the error section of the disc).

Posted by: shill at May 24, 2004 01:13 PM

I must say that in the time I have spent visiting this website, I think this is the first discussion where people ended with an agreement. I hope I didn't jinx it.

Posted by: never mind that at May 24, 2004 07:29 PM

This error was mine, so I can confirm that this was in a normal XBox (not modded) and that the disc is perfectly fine (no damage, never did this again). It makes sense that the message was on the disc itself, but it was still confusing to see that message pop-up -- telling me to insert that XBox disc into the XBox it was already in. Perhaps better wording would have helped.

Posted by: nowak at May 25, 2004 02:08 PM

my xbox has killed my ps2! it was knocked off my shelf by my cat and fell sidewaqrds onto my ps2 crushing the top. And now my xbox keeps coming up (this is an xbox disk......) and my ps2 is totalled, and it had mafia in it noooooooooooooooo!!!

Posted by: stephen at May 28, 2004 10:37 AM

stephen can i buy your xbox for $50 and shiping?

Posted by: KDragon at May 30, 2004 10:01 PM

sadly not i have already sold it on ebay for $40

Posted by: stephen at June 8, 2004 10:32 AM

Actually, this is an error generated by the console itself. Why it's worded the way it is... that's beyond me. But it's not coming from the DVD. Microsoft call center says they don't know what causes the problem, but that the problem indicates a repair must be made in the repair center. (They probably flash the EEPROM and BIOS to fix it.)

Posted by: isteck at July 15, 2004 05:05 PM

ha ha ha. yet another reason why xbox sucks!

Posted by: Eric at July 18, 2004 12:59 AM

actually, Eric, the X in Xbox may as well stand for Pandora's, because the xbox is actually an intel based computer with a (crappy, linux hating) bios made to recognize and play a certain format of games. now if you get a modchip for it, you can bypass that (crappy) bios alltogether and turn it into your every day desktop comp. but i don't know why you'd do that, because Xbox does have some awesome games, which would be sacrificed if you were to put Linux or something on your xbox. the mod chip doesn't kill it, linux does; ok, linux doesn't, but the things you do to PUT linux on it kills the xbox. so technically, the BIOS of the xbox sucks

Posted by: lane at July 19, 2004 01:03 PM

Put a xbox game in your computer..That is what you get

Posted by: Jeremy Randolph at July 22, 2004 11:26 AM

i just got this message... i think my IDE cable is screwed up, because ive also been getting error code 11, which is a 'no dvd' error. we opened up the box and cleaned the dvd drive, but its still doing the same thing. and right before the xbox game disc message appeared a message came up that said the disc was dirty or damaged, but it is fine... sucky xbox

Posted by: Patrick at July 26, 2004 06:48 PM

I got this screen when I... umm... put a copied version of Thief: Deadly Shadows in my Xbox. This is obviously a format issue. (By the way, the copy was my own personal copy, and I did not distribute it or buy it from anyone illegally!)

Posted by: Bill at August 11, 2004 04:05 AM

Does anybody know of a good emulator for the XBOX? I want to play games I have (fully legal games I bought @ Toys R' Us) on my computer. So, it's more of a converter...

Posted by: Mark at August 12, 2004 06:10 PM

Posted by: antonio at September 29, 2004 08:56 PM

antonio, i would try to take to top of the xbox because this sounds like a dirty lens. BUT it will void your warrenty so choose wisley

Posted by: stephen at October 18, 2004 10:22 AM

Did you have a DVD Playback kit plugged in at the time? It did that to my friend once...

Posted by: lee at November 9, 2004 07:37 AM

For all you people out there that are in need of help with the Xbox, PS2, or GCN not reading game/DVD disks properly, it's probably because of a dirty lens.

For GCN, use rubbing alchohol. This may not fully work (IE it will read the disk, but have limited gameplay time) but at least try. if it doesn't work, and your warranty is up, just give it to a professional GCN-fixer-upper-repairman-guy and ask him what the problem is. Ask him how much it will cost to fix it and then decide if you want him to fix it, or buy a new one.

For Xbox or PS2, if your warrenty is up, you might want to open it up, and clean the lens that way. If, before the message started coming up, it had limited gameplay time that got shorter and shorter the more you turned it on and off, then it's probably the best thing to do, but TRY NOT TO BREAK ANYTHING (IE the screws/plastic that holds it together)!!!

If your warrenty is not up yet, you do not want to do this, or you don't want to take the risk of breaking something, then take it to a PS2-fixer-upper-repairman-guy/Xbox-fixer-upper-repairman-guy, ask him what's wrong and how much it will cost, and decide on either fixing it, or buying a new one.

That's all I have to say, as my GCN broke down during Blackout 2004, and it had gameplay time that got shorter and shorter the more times I played it, until finally, it just stopped working altogether. I had my GCN for about a year and a half, so the warrenty was way past up, so I decided to buy a new one, and now I've had no further problems with my old GCN (seeing as I never play that one anymore). I have about every Nintendo gaming system except for Game Boy (the BIG one), Game Boy SP, and Game Boy DS (which I REALLY want for Christmas [But don't ask where I live, as I will not tell where I live to the world for everyone to see, I'm not that narrow-minded.].). I do not have a PS, PS2, Xbox, or any other gaming system except a computer (:sarcasim: yea I sent this through my fridge... :sarcasim:).

I am sincerely sorry for my long post, as I do not intend to get attention, but to help others fix their gaming systems with this post.

Posted by: does it really matter? at November 24, 2004 08:37 PM

In my previous post, I should have mentioned that if you have a GCN, PS2, or Xbox, talk to the company who made it (IE Microsoft, Nintendo, etc. [I serously don't know who makes those PS2's, sorry!] ) and see if you can get them to replace it because you have a warrenty. I have noticed that the Nintendo people seem to have extras of very old systems and games! I had a nintendo (the ORIGINAL one, with the lid and all) with those stupid square controllers, and they replaced them with what seemed to be newer, better controllers that looked kinda like this:

I never knew they had these until I got them. at least their more comfortable for MY hands (the corners went right into my palms!!!).

Posted by: kman at December 28, 2004 01:10 AM

alright, my xbox has been freezing up 4 a while and it has begun to piss me off. it told me that it requires service and to call customer support. so i did. they told me that it would cost about $100 to fix plus $50 s&h. but they didnt mention what was wrong with it(i.e. dirty lens, dust in the fan etc.)so here is my question. since my warranty is up, should i pay microso-fuckedinthehead to fix it, or buy a new one(or used off internet) or should i send it in to get modded. what ever that last one means(i was told that it is pretty cool) fyi i live in the sticks of wisconsin and im pretty sure that there is no place to take it that would be worth my while. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Posted by: ellis at January 9, 2005 11:50 PM

Alright, I don't know all the technical mumbo-jumbo or anything, but here goes; I first started getting this message way back with "Mechassault" saying that "[My] Xbox can't read the disc. Make sure it's an XBox game, DVD, or audio CD. Also check to see that it is not dirty or damaged. Remove the disc to continue". This didn't worry me; The disc really was dirty and all f-cked up. Fast forward to November 9th 2004, I can't get Halo 2 to run. I mean, if I turned the console on and off enough times, it would eventually let me play. After I did that enough times (and, thank god, had already beaten the game) it started giving me a similar message within gameplay (Your XBox cannot read the disc. It may be dirty or damaged). Eventually I just gave up video games for a while. Fast Forward again to Christmas 2004. I got Call Of Duty: Finest Hour, Ghost Recon 2, and Need for speed underground 2, along with a cleaning kit for the lens of the system. This is where things run sour. Call Of Duty has yet to work, Ghost Recon 2 works fine but I'm bored to tears with it since I can't even get past the first level, and Need For Speed Underground 2, which I've been having so much fun with, is suddenly giving me in-game error messages. I've run the disc cleaner several times and done everything xbox.com and 1-800-4MY-XBOX told me to. Well, except send it in. They want $80 for repairs, which makes me mad, since they made me delete all my memory just to find out that it didn't fix the problem, and that my warranty had (conveniently) run out. It gets worse! The local Gamestop doesn't do repairs and the closest guy to us who can doesn't know how much it will cost and lives a good hour and a half away. I'm not too keen on any of the above options, and the gameplay just keeps getting shorter and shorter. Is it because of the DVD playback kit? Is it just age? What can I do to fix it? This is pretty surprising to me, seeing as how I've always been a fan of how robust the XBox is compared to the PS2, and how much cooler it is than the GCN. Please help.

This error can also be caused by the laser assembly becoming dirty, anyone who would like the assembly cleaned, I will clean this for $50 not including the cost of shipping the xbox to me. This procedure nulifys the warranty on the xbox but I have done this with multiple xbox's with a very high repair rate. If interested in this service, please contact me at bsb_13@hotmail.com

Marvin you seem queer!,

I dont think you know what your talking about.

Posted by: Sting at March 2, 2005 06:50 PM

How can you fix the nVidia chip? If you mean fix by putting a new heatink on it i can understand that, but fixing the chip?!?! PSU and HD. Marvin you are wrong that you can't make an xbox a computer. Microsoft released a disc with Win XP Media Center. You just pop the disc in and you have media center runnin on your xbox, but since the OS is on the disc it won't take up much space on you HD,but storing Files,Pics etc.. will take up a lot of spcae on your xbox. Only got 8GB unless you have the 10GB modle.8 gig is made by western digital and the 10 gig is made by seagate. You have to compleatly different drive so how could you fix them. Also MS also had the HD companies but a special chip on the HDs so they lock the HD if it is used in anyrhing but an xbox.My guess is you get the error for a HD failure the little chip is probably fried.I have seen HDs from 1995 and they still work good.So what ever microsoft has done to the HDs shorten there life span.

Posted by: Will at March 28, 2005 01:02 AM

First of all I agree that microsoft sucks but simply for the reason they are too fucking greedy.

Think about it 50% + of Xboxs screw up shortly after the warrenty is up and they charge u about what it cost to buy a new 1 to fix it when what they really do is switch out the dvd drive.

Also microsoft is the only place i know of that charges you to have questions answered about thier own products, and not no $1.50 a question....more like $99 (seriously go look) a question.

And this company is run by the richest man in the world simply because he knows how to screw people in to giving up more and more money.

I wish everyone could see that and we all boycot bill gates for being a greedy bastard(cuz if he wanted he could have made Xbox $20 a system on release day and he still would have been fine).

Posted by: Shaggy at March 28, 2005 02:49 AM

I agree with you shaggy. I can build a computer less than $250. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for something with a celersuck CPU in it

Will the screws are under the rubber feet and the "If you take of this off your warrenty will be voided" sticker.

Posted by: U-R-A-MORON-IF-U-LIKE-MICROSOFT at March 28, 2005 05:35 PM

Also i know in other place that charges you for Questions. Epson Tech Support. $20 to ask why my printer is printing. Shaggy they dont give u a new dvd drive . they give u a new suckbox and say they could not retrieve ur save games from the ut HD with a fried LOCK-OUT-CHIP that only unlocks the HD when the xbox give the code to unlock it or the unlock code in the xbox gets corrupt. Microsuck is using sub premium parts in the xboxes. I do not get why they would not want people messing inside the xboxes. if they could that would be better because if you fried you XB you would bb a new one and increas MS profits.

Posted by: U-R-A-MORON-IF-U-LIKE-MICROSOFT at March 28, 2005 05:43 PM

One mor thing. i no 4 a fact that the xbox has a timer in it that shorts out the MB or any other part i the xbox that it decides to short out once the warrenty is up. The timer tells the PSU to change the polarity, sends 12v threw the 5v line,5v threw the 3v line and 3v threw the 12v line and it increase the CPU vlotage to 12v, sends a jolt of power to the HD to fry it and the same for the DVD

and yeah.. bill gates is a dumbass who just copied apple and changed it a little bit to make millions. now he can't come up with anything new, that is why the xbox and the xbox 360 are basically the same things. only difference is the graphics and whatever.. they are basically the same either way. so that fuck head has no mind of his own and can shove his xbox up his ass.

For people who have error 07, means your HDD is toasted, you can't just buy another hard drive and replace it because the mother board of the xbox send an unlocking code to the harddrive from the EEPROM and unlocks the HD for access to the Dash Board, also if u just replace the HD you wouldn't have a Dash board, one way that you could mabye fix it, is modding the Xbox and Buying a new HDD, note: you must install a dashboard manually....
