Broken: Dell laptop plug

dell5150_powerplugdell5150_powerplug_2Eric Tiggeler writes from Amsterdam:

Now and then I like to plug my Dell 5150 laptop into mains power. The power socket is, ofcourse, at the back of the computer. Bending over the laptop, the user has to decide where to plug in the power chord. There are two options: a square hole on the right side, and a round one on the left side. The power supply plug is a round one, so the obvious choice is... the wrong choice. Do not attempt to fit the round plug into the round hole: it turns out to be the TV adapter socket. The (round) power socket is, strangely enough, hidden in a square moulding in the laptop case. Every time I plug in my laptop, I find myself trying to plug a round peg in a square hole.

Easy as Dell? Not really ...

Comments:

Ooh. Good one. BZZZT!

I encountered a similar issue on a Dell just the other day.

Why is my USB mouse not working? It's plugged in - check.

Oh. I've plugged it into the ethernet port. (It fits quite well actually, and stays put.)

(Of course, this isn't actually a Dell issue exclusively...)

But I do have issue with plug locations a lot.

1] The audio jack is on the left side, right where my mouse (for my left hand) is. I'm constantly crashing into the cable, which sticks straight out.

2] The power cable is soon going to get crimped *again*. I've already replaced it once. It too easily crimps just at the point past the anti-crimp zone (1 inch out from laptop plug).

1] The CD is front-mounted and its open/close button is raised. *Every time* anything touches the front of the laptop (like, say, my belly), the CD tray pops open.

I have another problem with the power supply pug of this same model: it's quite loose. It's frustrating trying to use this machine in your lap when simply shifting your position can cause the plug to fall out.

Posted by: Ilari Sani at July 8, 2004 06:12 AM

Apple doesn't have this problem on their laptops. You could continue to bitch, or buy a laptop that doesn't have that problem. Apple places all the connectors on one side.

Posted by: kwyjibo at July 8, 2004 08:46 AM

The big problem with cords on the back of the laptop is it makes it hard to use on your lap. :P

The problem with Apple's design (power and all other sockets on the sides) is that it's always the "wrong" side :) -- well mostly the USB ports on the left are inconvenient for right-handed mouse users.

_@_v - lest anyone think apple laptops are any better i should note that the engineer in charge of apple laptop power supplies is a hydrocephalic moonbat.

_@_v - in his effervescent brilliance he puts a large ceramic filter just behind the plug so there a lot of mass right behind the plug. this is to ensure that the plug or the jack holding it breaks off requiring an expensive service call.

Posted by: she-snailie _@_v at July 11, 2004 12:26 PM

>well mostly the USB ports on the left are inconvenient for right-handed mouse users.

Only if you're using one of those mice with the eight-inch cord. ;)

There's a big coil of extra mouse cable laying on my desk over to the left of my Powerbook, so I don't see the problem there.

Posted by: Chaz Larson at July 13, 2004 05:09 PM

first of all, why is it harder to use a notebook on your lap when the cords are on the back? i have no problem with it. my dell has the cd drive on the side so thats not a problem. i dont have to have an extension cord for my mouse, cuz its on the back. and you dont really need to blame dell for trying to plug your power into an svideo plug. just a thought

Posted by: koskela at July 14, 2004 10:01 PM

Another laptop-related annoyance that I recently realized was fairly common:

Apple, IBM, HP and Gateway put Fn in the lower-left corner of the keyboard, with Ctrl beside it.

Dell, Acer and Sony have those two keys in the opposite order, which repeatedly confuses me whenever I have to use one of those brands. (Ctrl+Z! Ctrl+Z! Why isn't it working? ...Oh, I'm hitting Fn+Z.)

(Yes, yes, I know there's an easy solution-- get an external keyboard-- but I still think it's at least a minor nuisance when I don't have one immediately available...)

Posted by: codeman38 at July 15, 2004 12:26 PM

Thank you Koskela. I've got a dell myself and I love it. For these people that are to stupid to figure out which whole to plug the cord into, Dell ships a BIG PICTURE that shows you were to plug everything in. GET A BRAIN PEOPLE!! I saw this web site listed in a magazine and thought it would be pretty funny to check out. So far I am sick to see how stupid some people are. No common sense at all!! Thanks to people like Koskela this world still has some hope!

Posted by: Jason at July 16, 2004 02:03 AM

I once had a laptop that had it's fan undernieth. So if you wanted to use it on your lap it would over-heat because your knee covered that fan. -my laptop overheated

Posted by: Nathan Hughes at July 16, 2004 06:22 PM

Nathan, the issue isn't whether or not Dell is trying to fool you into using the wrong connector by not telling you which one it is. It's that, for some reason, they placed a circular video port next to a square hole that in turn hides another circular power port. Most people will be plugging in the power jack far more often than the video-out port, and so it's very easy to get confused.

A simple fix would have been to move the video-out port somewehere else (say, next to the other AV ports) and use a round hole for the power port. It's just a case of bad industrial design - yes, I am a Mac user and thus am biased, but it's the little things like that that Apple gets right, things that improve the experience in a stealthy but discernable way.

Incidentally, I think that what Apple has done with the new powerbooks is a step in the right direction - keep the ports on the left side, where they don't get in the way of most peoples' mousing hand if lots of things are plugged in (ever think about that?) and put one USB port on the right for people with short mouse cords.

A more annoying laptop design problem is when they place the speakers in front of the keyboard, where your palms and wrists rest. Nothing like listening to half-muted music while you're typing.

Just run into this BROKEN DELL PLUG thing!

-tore apart the cable up to the plug looking for a wire break.(I can solder things, but not troubleshoot)

Discovered Ceramic filter near plug(wondered what the hell that was.)

Ordered new AC adapter.

Plugged in . Nothing.

Broken female connector on motherboard-damn!

Connector is a "Hirose RP-34" designed for tight spaces and common-sensically a square plug would be more stable,in terms of not stretching the internal contacts from sideways movement.

The weak link is naturally the motherboard socket mount. IMHE the solders have broken somewhere. My out of warranty Inspiron 8200 is laid out all over my desk, and i'm gonna figure this frigging thing out.

Posted by: Will at July 24, 2004 03:28 PM

Eric had a legimate complaint... Jason, you jackass, a round plug should not go in a square hole when a round one is adjacent to it! A good design is intuitive and as error proof as can be.

Posted by: duh at August 29, 2004 05:33 AM

One of the most anoying problems on the Dell Latitude is "Unused USB Ports" no matter how I connect my devices into various ports they all show up under one USB hub and complains its out of power while shows 6 Unused ports. WinXP askes me to connect some of the devices to the other "Unused Ports". Where are they ? Why cant I see them ?

Posted by: Jacob at October 19, 2004 08:33 AM

Has anyone found a source for a replacement round power connector? On this page it is refenced as a Hirose RP-34, however every place i find that carries them online only show them as a square din style not round.

Posted by: Kevin at November 16, 2004 04:09 PM

Will,

I have the same fucking problem, except I still have warrenty. It really is a combonation of several fundemental design problems.

- The fucking plug should be bent, not straight, (3 inches of leaverage is not good)

- The jack should really be screwed to f'ing the case. (like my 4 year old sony that's been thrown on the floor 20 times from various people tripping on the f'ing cord and still works like a charm, dispite all the missing nonessential parts.

- The jack should be at the corner of the case so that the cord doesn't block the cooling system.

- Is it just me, or does this model come unplugged way too easily. I want a fucking notched plug, so it comes out on command, and not by accident. A plug that's always half out breaks things REALLY FAST!!!

What's even funnier is how it broke. I've never put strain on the cord. In fact, one night I was watching a movie with some friends, and when I took the computer to another room, it worked for 10 min. and then suddenly I was on batteries. It's never worked since, although the power supply works on other dells.

Thanks for the story :)

Called both companies and wouldnt you figure they wanted to sell me a whole new motherboard. These are ranging from $750.00 - $1300.00. I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 with the fan underneath with a very tiny vent on the just in case if the main vent gets blocked.WORST DESIGN EVER even with the

side vent if i have it im my lap and block the vent a little bit the laptop gets EXTREMELY HOT IN A SHORT TIME.I also have a Toshiba Satellite 2415-S205.On this laptop the CPU fan sucks air in through many places not just

1 and this way it helps keep the inside of it cool too.The Dell's fan just cools dowm the CPU poorly.

"and a hp pavillion zd7010 and both have damaged power plugs on the motherboards. Called both companies and wouldnt you figure they wanted to sell me a whole new motherboard."

It's not the mobo, or even the connector (the receptacle), which seems like the obvious problem, it's the inside of the plug itself. There's a horseshoe contact inside the plug, brass or similar when it oughta be spring steel. Across time and use, the contacts get mashed outwards and no longer meet the motherboard's receptacle post.

Get the plug in a -lot- of light, I used a princeton tec pulsar II keylight as a flashlight for this, I'm talking a lot of light. If you can see what you're doing, jam a thumbtack under one side of the plug's inner contacts and gently bend the contact back out.

This is good enough to work for a while until it does it again. Don't fix both sides, fixing both isn't necessary and could limit the number of times the fix can be performed by doing both sides unnecessarily.

Something, perhaps a piece of a sewing needle?, could conceivably be jammed under the contacts (inside the plug) to keep it from getting mashed too far outwards during use by torque against the post. It sounds good, but might come loose and fall out, might force the contact to jump its track... if you improvise towards a more permanent fix, go slow and use your head.

Enjoy!

Hey, anybody know where you can get the little power connector for the Dell 5150 without having to buy the whole bleepin motherboard? Mine is broken, you'd think a competent laptop repair person could re-solder a connector, so if I could just FIND one...

In reference to the broken Dell plug thing. I have experienced this also on my Latitude. Took it to a computer repair and they said it is $250 to solder it back on. But I have taken it apart and noticed that it is the mother board that has snapped off at the plug. My solution? Just find another way to recharge the batteries and screw the whole power adapter thing. You can get a desktop charger for labtop batteries at about $150 http://www.lindelectronics.com/cgi-bin/store/shop.cgi/!ORDERID!/other/PROEM-00002/dbx_gen_detail_product/ Better than what they charge to fix my computer. Just a suggestion to those whose mother boards have not snapped yet and just have the plug problem.

OK, so I don't own a Dell Latitude, (rather, a Compaq and that, one with the fan orifice on the underneath) but the use of non-standard and/ or non-replaceable plugs is not new.

If you can actually unsolder the broken plug assembly from the motherboard, then the ugly but terribly functional approach, is to solder a piece of suitable gauge "figure eight" to the pads (or whatever is left of them), loop it through or around a nearby hole or stud, and terminate it outside on whatever fitting - not necessarily the original type - is readily available and durable. In many cases, you can get compact moulded fittings with lead tails which you cut to length and terminate on the motherboard, with the suitable anchoring.

Can then at the least charge batteries, run on mains, etc., and it won't pull loose unless you wish it to.

I also have the same power jack issue with my Inspiron 5150. Any slight movement to the power cord or the laptop body would lost the power connection. I lived with it for about 2 weeks and it finally die on me, no matter what I did the power never comes on again. After i disassemblied the laptop, I noticed a light brownlish color at the solder joints (at the back side of the motherboard) by the input power jack. There seems to have 3 pins in the row under the power jack and when I ohmed it out, 2 out of 3 pins are still connected and 1 toward the motherboard is open. I suspected the power jack was overheated and have been looking for a new replacement. The label on the jack says FOXCONN 1340B and that was it. I've searched the internet the last few days and couldn't find any replacement for it, can somebody please help? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Deja Vu ALL OVER AGAIN!!

I have a Inspiron 5100. The wire/cord from the AC Adaptor to the computer broke just after the damn protective bootie that is really no bigger than a thumb nail and not much help. I had two adaptors (for home and work) and they both broke in the same place. So... no power, no laptop.

I ordered a replacement online thru, of course, DELL. I paid for overnight shipping. Three days later, the package arrives. I plug it in. WRONG FRIGGIN ADAPTOR but the right part number on the packing slip. Bells sound (really) and the laptop tells me that this is an incompatible AC adaptor (must be chips for compatibility on the laptop and adaptor) and will shut down. NOOOOOOOOOO, I yell. They did it again.

They did what?? Why I had two adaptors is in the first year of ownership, the AC adaptor broke and I ordered a replacement. (Same problem, wire broke just after adaptor unit.) THAT event happened over 12 months ago. The same problem coming from Dell: Right packing slip, wrong adaptor. Which equals bells, warnings shutdowns. So I ordered two given the design flaw of the AC Adpator unit.

So now in the present, it is happened yet again. I call Dell Customer Service, tell them the problem and get a replacement shipped. They attempt to charge me for one and ship it ground. You'll get that in 5 or 6 biz days she tells me. I get madder than a wet hen and say, your fault, you pay and I've ALREADY paid for overnight shipping. They say yep, you're right. We'll get that right out and pick up the one for return. UPS comes the very next morning for the return. DHL/AIRBORNE arrives 5 days later with the replacement unit. (it WAS shipped overnight. It just took them 4 days to pick it and ship it.) I open it up eager to get back to work. SAME DAMN BELLS, WARNINGS AND SHUTDOWNS. How much you wanna bet I am playing the part of Bill Murray in DELL's stupid version of Groundhog Day? I am gonna order the adaptor again with a coupon from the nice DEll lady in home office of Customer Service IN INDIA! and try this whole thing again. And probably again and again until I make them run out of the wrong part in the right bin or catch the damn "I don't give a damn what ships as long as it's something" picker boy on a day off.

Lets start off by saying Dell Sucks. Put a complaint in today with the BBB. Also, I am going to file a complaint with the DA of Texas, enough compliants and a class action lawsuit can be filed. I have an Inspiron 5150. And of course, Dc jack broke off. Sounding all too familiar isn't it. Called Dell, need new motherboard. $1700.00 last year, two months off warranty, and now Dell wants me to spend at least another $500.00. All these complaints, and Dell should fix the problem. Here is the web address for Texas DA. https://www.oag.state.tx.us/forms/cpd/cpd_getinfo.php Now computer repairs have their own websites specializing in DC jack reapir. This is ridiculous, and a rip off. Called Dell Costumer Service, spoke to a supervisor, who was rude and arguing with me. Asked for manager, and was somehow disconnected. DELL SUCKS. Go Figure. We all got robbed.

I had the mainboard in my 5160 replaced due to a crack in the bottom of the power connector. Now two months later the power connector is loose and every now and then i get the "Cannot detemine the power adapter type" message. So, I am going to fix it this time with my trusty soldering iron!!

Oh, did I mention that Dell replaces the mainboard with refurbished ones? Some refurbished board I got.

Posted by: Anubis at November 13, 2005 03:56 PM

Yeah, my 5150 hasn't worked properly since January.

Whenever I plugged the adapter in, it would switch back and forth between charging and not charging. Doing that forces the CPUsage to jump up to 100% right away every, so I can't leave it alone or it might break the fan (again) and kill the battery.

Eventually it got so bad that I had to push the plug to the side and move it around until it started charging, then wedge something against it so that it wouldn't budge.

I tried getting a new adapter, and the problem wasn't quite as bad for a while, but now it's getting back to the way it used to be and I'm getting really steamed.

Posted by: Fel at November 15, 2005 08:34 PM

Well, i'm not alone, it's a good news... (for me, i feel less desperate)

This problem isn't "US-limited", i have the same problem in France with my D600.

Like Fel, my laptop was working for 6 month after moving the cord around in the power jack. I've tried to use another adapter but it was worth !

Since yesterday, the connector is definitively broken. No power = no charging = no battery...

i'm out of warranty for a year.

I hope to find a new power jack because i don't want to change my laptop but i think i will be more difficult than i believed :)

Do you know a good "Laptop doctor" in Paris ?

regards.

I wanted to acknowledge the great repair work done on my Dell Latitude D500 by the The Laptop Doctor:

www.doctorlaptop-repair-jack.com

blueddiamondd@harbornet.com

The dc jack on my laptop came unsoldered from the motherboard. I checked locally (Houston, TX) and everyone I spoke to wanted to replace the motherboard for $$$. Found info on repairing the dc jack on the website listed above. I sent my laptop to Doc who quickly replaced the dc jack and sent my laptop back, keeping me updated throughout. Doc repaired the jack for a little more than $100. not including shipping.

Ummm, companies usually outsource the pcbs for these machines, so wouldn't they be to blame as well?

damn ac port connected to the motherboard broke after 5 months dell 1150 inspiron.

Posted by: nakia at January 30, 2006 02:11 AM

The problem where the machine dies or appears to "short out" when the case is touched is actually just that... a short occuring between the bottom of the case and a chip on the mobo near the wifi card. Very simple fix for this....slide a few layers of electrical tape in between the case and the mobo, from the wifi card access area. Its just to the left ot he card...where ytou see their black insulation has a little tab that juts out...apparently this tab is wearing thought and a chip is shorting to the mobo. I just had one of these in the shop a few weeks ago w/ this problem...thoght it to be a very odd issue when I finally discovered what it was...and thought I was the only to have seen it...apparently I am wrong and its a common issue.

I too have now found to my cost the poor quality of Dell....

My 510M laptop kept going off ac power and first dell diagnosed a faulty adaptor. When this did not solve the problem they collected it to look at it. I have today been informed that the ac port has come loose from the motherboard and that I will have to pay £325 plus vat to have it repaired. This is despite still being in warranty!!!!!!

Apparently I have caused the damage by not being gentle enough with it lol. I HAVE NOT

Having researched this accross the net it seems that the 5150 model is well known for this problem and that the fault lies with the poor design and soldering of the port to the motherboard. I kinda suspect that my model may have a similar faulty design but simply has not come to the fore yet? I feel very conned that Dell are trying to wriggle out of the warranty and don't know what to do????

My Dell Inspiron 1150 notebook was rarely used in it's 1 1/2 year life. It became extremely slow within about 8 months after purchase, I re-installed Win XP, (I had to contact Dell support to get an OS because it was not in my software package) things went well for about 6 months. One day I pushed the power button and, nothing absolutely nothing, with or without the battery. Green light on the ac adaptor is on, no LED lights, fan, or sound, no sign of life on the Inspiron. Now I am reading on forums that this MB has poor soldering, not only with the power switch, but also the USB ports.

I'm sorry, I don't have the answer. I'm just adding myself to the list of victims...:(((

My Dell 5150 will not except power from the A/C adapter. As you plug it in, 2 of the lights on the front flash on then go out. Got a new A/C adapter and it still does the same thing. I have be told by Tech. support and other computer repair stores that it could be the BIOS, or the connector, or the Palm Rest(they also called it a Reed switch), but that it is most likely the motherboard. I am also finding out that this problem appears to be common with this model.

5150 Inspiron Palm rest short. Problem first occurred with computer shorting out when left palm rest was touch; next power button would only work intermittently; now it does not work at all. How common is this? How is it fixed? Thx.

Dell has sold their Inspiron 5150 laptops for a few years now, but there is one problem. The laptops only work for about a year until the warranty runs out. There is an amazingly widespread problem with these laptops. Dell has been contacted numerous times. but they refuse to do anything about it. The fact is they are selling laptops that DON'T WORK. They even removed their tech support page for the Inspiron 5150 becasue they had over 60 pages of complaints. Here are some sites to help you understand just how bad this is.

Please help the thousands who spend about two grand on a product that is faulty and has an inferior design. I found all these sites in about 20 minutes of searching for support with my problem. There are probably many many more sites like these that I cannot find just through a search engine.

There are plenty of diet pills available in the market for weight loss. But I suggest you to buy phentermine. Why? Because phentermine is a way ahead of other drugs when the demand is on the cost-effective solutions. It is significantly cheaper than other diet pills and so its market presence is greatly felt. Would you like to incorporate it in your daily schedule or go for other drugs about whom no genuine information is available at all? I trust you and am sure that phentermine would be the ultimate choice. Held out your hands for it only after following the instructions of a physician. Go for phentermine online which is the easiest and least time-consuming route to the drug. Phentermine online will lead you to cheap phentermine in no time and your weight loss dream would be instantly transformed into reality.
