Broken: "Walk" signal visibility

Dsc00001Dsc00005Brian Everton writes from Winnipeg:

I walk by this intersection often.  It is right next to a neighbourhood elementary school.  It would seem that the utility pole is older than the pedestrian crossing signals.  Regardless of which came first, the civic signals department personnel continue to service the pedestrian signals which are hidden by the utility pole.  The utility pole is not much more than 18 inches in front of the signal lights.

What's wrong with developing children's problem solving skills? With all the hullaballoo about keeping America competitive, I would think this was a GOOD thing!

Unfortunately it's not in America. Canadians will soon take over the world!

Why does stuff like this happen? I guess the people actually putting it in don't care since they're getting paid anyway.

We had a similar incident near us, where the highway department put up a 2' square sign designating a "historic highway" in such a way as to almost completely obscure the blue-and-white "H" hospital direction sign about 10' behind it. They did eventually move the sign; fortunately, in the meantime if someone DID miss that particular turn there was another one about a mile down the road, which didn't sustantially lengthen the overall route to the hospital.

"substantially", not "sustantially". Duh.

I hate when that happens.

"I guess the people actually putting it in don't care since they're getting paid anyway."

That's gotta be the problem. "Instructions say put it here, that's where it's going. Can I have my paycheck now?" You would think that thinking would be a requirement for these jobs.

" You would think that thinking would be a requirement for these jobs."

No offense, but you are refering a job posting signs for whatever version of DOT they have, just making sure. Its like one of my frequent complaints: "They work at a fast food restaurant, surely they can put straws in every bag." Well, no.

It would have been really ironic if they put up a "We keep our children safe." sign

Jay, no offence but I think the whole subject matter of this site, is proof positive, that carelessness and stupidity are not limited to those in menial jobs.

It looks like the utility poll bends a bit to the left. Maybe it wasn't so worped when the sign as installed. My two cents

If the post (or signal) installers called in to report the problem, their supervisor just might have said, "Hey, just do your job and don't worry about."
