Broken: Laminate flooring package

File0001_4_1_2

Greg points this out, from a package of laminate flooring:
Open packs and let acclimate for 48 hours before opening!
What do they mean?

Comments:

One thing that is broken is the time on this post, it's STILL NOVEMBER 17th!

Just kidding.

Perhaps they mean open the outer packaging but don't open the inner packaging for 48 hrs? The wording is definitly confusing.

they want you to by twice as much as you need, then eat half. if you arent dead in 48 hours use the rest.

'laminate flooring' is written in like 7 languages, yet those instructions are only in english.

It means to open the packages of wood and expose them to the air so that the wood has a chance to acclimate to the environment in which they will be installed, with regard to temperature and humidity.

It took me three readings to figure out what was wrong. It's just one of those things your eyes seem to skip.

Posted by: iSani at November 18, 2005 04:32 AM

gmangw, why would you eat flooring?

Posted by: ben at November 18, 2005 07:35 AM

BY OPENING THE PACKAGE IT WILL ACCLIMATE THE WOOD TO YOUR HOUSE, AND IT USUALLY WARPS A BIT AS IT DRIES, THEN YOU CAN PICK OUT THE STRAIGHTER ONES TO INSTALL. SOME CAN REALLY WARP BADLY. YOU DON'T WANT THEM TO WARP ON YOUR WALL. NOT BROKEN FOR SURE.

Posted by: TICTIC at November 18, 2005 07:40 AM

ok ok, you don't want it to warp on the FLOOR. (they make this stuff for walls too).

Posted by: tictic at November 18, 2005 07:42 AM

Hey TicTic and MooBob: Read it again. We all get why you would open the package and let the wood acclimate -- but it says to "OPEN THE PACKAGE" and let it acclimate for 48 hours "BEFORE OPENING".

Posted by: stoo at November 18, 2005 07:49 AM

I'm guessing here, but maybe what they meant to say was, "Open packs and let acclimate for 48 hours before USE."

Posted by: Hag at November 18, 2005 08:51 AM

Please ignore this comment for 48 hours before reading.

I agree really weird. Now if I reemmber from helping a friend with this stuff, it comes plastic wrapped and the flooring inside is strapped. The ones we did the plastic had been removed actually the week before, but the instructions were two days (sounds like 48 hours to me). You were to have the plastic off and the flooring the the room it was to be used with the straps on for two days before using it. You were also only to take the straps off when it was ready to use to avoid warping. This is probably what they mean. But Uck horrible way to say it.

I'm fine with the 48 hours- in fact, it's a good thing they say that explicitly on the cover if there really is a problem with installing it too soon after opening. The broken thing here is "Open before opening." If they meant open the outer, but not inner packaging, they should've said that. I'm left wondering if I should open it or just let it sit in my house (closed). For all I know, they ventilate the bag somehow and keeping it in the *closed* bag will make it so the goods not only acclimate to your house, but also are kept straight. In which case, opening the bag would be a bad idea.

this is another example of why "people" just shouldnt do jobs at home that should be done by professionals. Hire a good contractor- and enjoy your floors resting assured that you had no hand in f*cking them up during installation.

Posted by: smartypants at November 18, 2005 11:22 AM

Hey Smarty you are giving the professionals a lot more credit they they generally deserve. Floors are frequently not that complicated, and you are probably as likely to have a contractor "f*ck" them up, althought that does give you someone to yell at about it.

Posted by: Ray Stevens at November 18, 2005 12:58 PM

Smarty and Ray you are both right. Last job I had done by Home Depot was indeed a floor and was indeed f**ked up so they got to redo it all at their own expense. Caveat seller.

Posted by: Pat at November 18, 2005 03:00 PM

Yeah, maybe if "people" (what does that mean, anyway?) were given instructions that actually made SENSE, they wouldn't have such problems doing things correctly...! Hey, I smell a conspiracy... ;D

Posted by: ambrocked at November 18, 2005 05:35 PM

It's a catch 22. You care about your floor, but don't have the knowledge. The contractor has the knowledge, but doesn't really care (at least as much as you do) about your floor.

Posted by: Eddie at November 18, 2005 05:37 PM

omg, they don't care?

Tell me it ain't so!

Like, tech support people do their job because they love helping people...right???

Posted by: I'm so funny at November 19, 2005 01:57 AM

No, tech support people do what they do because they enjoy making derogatory comments about users.

Bob has a point. See this page:

Also, if you lok at the top of the page, you will see that JD simutaniously made the first AND third posts!

I installed a laminate floor in my basement back when I was 17. It's easy as hell. A contractor would be an obscene waste of money.

Those directions are a tad...goofy. I don't understand why they couldn't just write a better sentence. Open before opening?

Posted by: Wooble at November 28, 2005 01:49 AM

but why the exclamation point? and why is this proclaimed on the front of the package? Instead of "Now featuring Strawberry laminate", it proclaims instructions. That's truly broken.

Posted by: jedwardcooper at March 13, 2006 05:32 PM

stupid response-- Mabey it contains bacteria inside another unopened package inside of that one, and the generate new bacteria in 48 hours, then you open it... don't laugh.
