Broken: Police car

Policecar David Hintze submits a picture taken on the freeway in California:

I saw this during a trip in California. Thought it was pretty funny to see a police car "out of service," since you don't see that too often.

Comments:

Emergency? Call 911- cause I aint helpin ya!

Posted by: gmangw at May 8, 2006 12:31 AM

Sold, maybe? Still hilarious.

Posted by: =David at May 8, 2006 12:48 AM

I've seen one of those before. Some old lady was driving it. But personally I don't think it should be legal to drive around in a vehicle that looks like an emergency vehicle, especially with the word "Sheriff" written on the side!

Posted by: piklocin at May 8, 2006 01:19 AM

Broken? Nope...happens all the time when police cars are transported to and from repair shops and are not "on patrol."

Posted by: shooter at May 8, 2006 01:21 AM

Not broken one bit.

Posted by: John Russell at May 8, 2006 01:55 AM

It probably IS broken.... that's why its out of service!

/me ducks

Not Broken, if a patrol car is driving somewhere, and they see trouble,, they should have to stop. A patrol car holds a big image.

Posted by: al at May 8, 2006 07:51 AM

Not broken at all... man, have we run out of ACTUAL broken things to present here? This is all that's left???

Posted by: Fred at May 8, 2006 08:21 AM

Possibly a car for the movie industry? Notice it doesn't say any particular county...

Posted by: nikfish at May 8, 2006 09:12 AM

I believe that in California "Geek Squad" was forced to change the color scheme of their cars because they looked too much like police cars... Yes... Volkswagen Beetle police cars...

Posted by: Jeff at May 8, 2006 09:45 AM

My vote is slightly broken. This could be a little confusing to people in need of help who see this car and mistake it for a police officer on patrol. However, it is cheaper to drive the car to its destination than to have it towed, thus saving tax money.

al,

That is precisely the reason that the police car is very clearly marked "out of service". The car is almost certainly being driven to a garage by a civilian, either to be de-commissioned as a police car or to be repaired.

nikfish,

I think movie prop cars are (or should be) moved in a semi-trailer so as not to create confusion.

Yeah, it really just means "Don't bother me I'm not actually an oficer, just transporting this car somewhere."

Looks like it was sold to another department (and they painted over the old county name) or the car had just been outfitted as a police car but not yet sold to any department.

"Yes... Volkswagen Beetle police cars..."

Some of our county sheriffs have the little hybrid cars. Zoom...zoom?

Posted by: JAC at May 8, 2006 12:02 PM

That is a currently commissioned police vehicle, with the LA County Sheriff's Office. The county name is on the seal, if you could get close enough to see it (or go to http://www.lasd.org/recruitment/lasd-star_sm.jpg for an example)

What would be more broken is frantically flagging down a police car only to find out it is a mechanic taking it in for alignment and not an officer trained to actually help you.

So yes, the car is actually broken, but using an 'out of service' banner to let the public know certainly isn't.

"I believe that in California "Geek Squad" was forced to change the color scheme of their cars because they looked too much like police cars"

Nope. There are plenty of black-and-white Geek Squad cars running around LA.

NOT broken. This is exactly what I would want a police department to do if they needed to have a car driven to and from service or a new owner.

NOT have a cop drive it - why waste cop salary on a driver when a civilian will do.

NOT haul it on a flatbed or semi trailer - why waste the money.

The "Out of Service" is conspicuously posted. WTH more could you want? And NO WONDER "you don't see that too often." This police department appears to know its vehicles may need maintenance.

> Yes... Volkswagen Beetle police cars...

The Ithaca, NY, police department has several VW Beetle police cars.

>The Ithaca, NY, police department has several VW Beetle police cars.

Those must be handy for chasing down bank robbers in Yugos or maybe burglars on mopeds!

Posted by: Hoki at May 8, 2006 04:55 PM

They should put square magnets over the word Sheriff, thus eliminating any confusion. But there is still the dilemma of the lights on the roof.

Posted by: Capt. Wafer at May 8, 2006 07:18 PM

Not broken. It's what they do when the cruiser is being driven by a non-officer (like a mechanic).

Posted by: Chad R. Larson at May 8, 2006 07:27 PM

In response to the third post: It's illegal if a non law enforment officer drives a marked police car.

Posted by: joe at May 8, 2006 07:53 PM

I see out of service cop cars all the time. This is not only not broken, it's the right thing to do.

Posted by: Steve at May 8, 2006 08:24 PM

I'm with Fred on this one. What, was it a slow news day or something?

Posted by: KarmaBaby at May 8, 2006 08:32 PM

>In response to the third post: It's illegal if a non law enforment officer drives a marked police car.

In response to...whatever post number this was: No, actually it's not. At least not in any place I'm aware of. Dealer reps, mechanics and the like do it all the time.

Now driving a non-police vehicle marked to look like a police vehicle...or a non-police officer acting like a police officer in a police vehicle...THAT'S illegal.

"I saw this during a trip in California. Thought it was pretty funny to see a police car 'out of service,' since you don't see that too often."

Why is that funny? Not Broken.

Hoki, if you drive a marked police car, it is illegal. A marked police car is defined as a car that has a design very similar to a real police vehicle, or has the words "police", or "sheriff" on it, or both(the design and words).

P.S. It's a misdemeanor if you impersonate a cop.

P.S.S. >Now driving a non-police vehicle marked to look like a police vehicle...or a non-police officer acting like a police officer in a police vehicle...THAT'S illegal.

That's what I said.

Posted by: joe at May 9, 2006 07:29 PM

This is absolutely broken. The car is broken. THAT'S why it's out of service all you MORONS who say it's not broken! ROFLMAO!!!!!

Posted by: Bosco Jones at May 10, 2006 05:11 PM

The Out-of-service signs pretty much make it an Un-marked car.. a guy driving a Police car clearly marked out of service is not impersonating a cop. I have actually seen police cars marked this way a few times.. I think Joe is broken for not understanding this..also if the car was still owned by the LAPD and not a sold car it is most likely the driver was an employee of the LAPD.. and maybe even a cop delivering it to the Mechanic..

Posted by: Infinity306 at May 10, 2006 06:13 PM

Heh, its funny how the words are written in window marker. Shouldn't the Police dept. just put a document in the window that says "Out of service" in large bold letters? Couldn't anybody just hijack a police car and write that in the window?

Posted by: Jesse at May 14, 2006 07:26 PM

I think it may be a move car, Mythbusters had a movie car for one of their tests that was clearly marked "Out of Service". Also in my town we do have a VW BUG Police car, and a PT cruser (mind you they are for community policing, ie school visits, events etc).

Posted by: Mike at May 18, 2006 05:26 PM

Um, Infinity306, I was talking about the third post.
