Broken: Do Not Enter sign in Delaware

DonotenterWilliam E. Smith submits a picture of a Do Not Enter sign: This sign is at a church parking lot near Oceanview, Delaware. Should I follow the arrow or the sign?

Comments:

just run down the sign. problem solved.

looks like this sign applies to the opening on the right.. not broken.

Posted by: Dragon at January 14, 2006 12:41 AM

Do Not Enter; however, if you do, this way only.

Posted by: silas at January 14, 2006 12:54 AM

Dragon: it looks like the area to the right of the sign is a parking space, complete with a concrete wheel barrier and a bit of lawn visible beyond that...

Dan - that space is reserved for pastor of the month, and the 'reserved parking only' signs were out of stock at the time.

It means don't drive onto the concrete part between the parking space and exit.

Ugh, this is getting confusing already. I think I'll just go onto homestarrunner.com and view all the SBemails consecutively, just for the heck of it. Yes, even tape-leg. Anyway, the picture is confusing. Ya.

_@_v - well you ARE exiting the church parking lot aren't you? so naturally you're in full compliance with the do not enter sign....

Only He, who is without sin, shall understand!

Posted by: Spruance at January 14, 2006 02:49 PM

This is much like the signs which say "Wrong Way."

How would the sign know which way I was going? :P

Posted by: john russell at January 14, 2006 04:13 PM

The sign switches direction depending on the direction the driver is coming

Posted by: levykid at January 14, 2006 04:34 PM

The sign switches directon depending on where you come from. not broken, just annoying... lol

Posted by: levykid at January 14, 2006 04:35 PM

It's obviously a Zen puzzle...

Is there another sign? In drivers ed (so long ago) we were taught that the road between two "do not enter" signs is the road the signs indicate.

"looks like this sign applies to the opening on the right.. not broken."

With the exception of "Do not pass" signs and street signs (e.g. Main St), all road signs on less-than-interstate roads of any kind belong on the right. _Not_ not broken.

I think this sign at the exit of a Church parking lot is perfectly clear: it's saying, "The world is a red ball of sin and hate. Do not enter. Stay here, where it's safe. But go if you must."

Posted by: Michael McWatters at January 15, 2006 10:06 AM

@John Russell: The sign faces one direction, so anybody who can see the sign must be going in the same direction, which is wrong.

"Do not enter the world."

I guess it would be more specific to say:

How would the sign know that that was not the way I was wanted to go. Because if that was the direction I wanted to go, wouldn't it be wrong to not go that way?

Are you kidding? The sign has no indication of where I am supposed to apply it, common sense would say it applies anywhere near it. Am I really meant to determine if this is a "less-than-interstate" road before deciding what to do? Besides, I do not live in America am would be unaware of bizarre local rules like this. In addition - is it really necessary to tell people not to drive on the wrong side of the road all the time? Broken.

Looks to me like this is the exit of a parking lot. Perhaps someone turned the sign around for kicks.

nickd, it seems as if you are quite the H*R fan! you might like the homestar runner wiki (click my name)

It means do not enter into the part on the right.
