Broken: San Francisco street name spelling

J Scott Hester writes:

On most street corners in San Francisco the name of the cross streets are stamped in the concrete near the edge of curb. This picture is of the Northeast corner of Sanchez and 18th Streets. The name "Sanchez" is spelled correctly on the street sign, but incorrectly (as "Sanches") in the concrete below.

Well, what if it's the sign that's spelled wrong?

Looks like "Romano Bernardo Sanches was a dark young Spaniard from Florida." (See fourth paragraph.)

I suspect the concrete building greatly predates the sign. Could we be seeing a transition in the way that the same name is commonly spelled?

Also Broken:

In the entry about the incorrectly spelled street name, you incorrectly spelled the word "incorrectly" with only one "r"

I reckon it's not far from the corner of 6th and Judha.

On the corner of Valencia and Cesar Chavez(ARMY) near Saint Luke's Hospital, the concrete reads "Chaves" instead of Chavez.

In Spanish, the letters "z" and "s" have the same pronunciation. In names, the suffix "-ez"(meaning "son of" as in "son on Sancho") can also be spelled "-es" Maybe the spelling of the street name has changed over the years.

No one has yet to comment on the fact that the "Sanches" on the street below was quite filthy...

A "dirty Sanches(z)" if you will :-)

As the original poster of this little debacle I can attest that the street name has always been spelled with a "z" and the concrete was last poured when handicapped ramps were put in less than 6 years ago. Sadly, this is not the only example of misspellings on the sidewalks of San Francisco, a problem that could be averted if the person doing the concrete merely looked up at the sign above.

The signs on a road near me spell the name "Burchfield" at one end."Birchfield" at the other end. and "berchfield" at an intersection along the road.
